Any Byrd Fixed blades on the horizon? No one seems to make an affordable 3.25"/7-7.5" overall city carry knife, unless its AUS4 or something like that.
Any plans?

If it's a Byrd, due to its value orientation, I'd expect to spend under $50 or so but, please, with a good kydex sheath.

If it's something else, $75-$100 out the door, with kydex, single edge, 1/8" thick, prefer flat grind but hollow ok, no recurve, open on handle material but grippy, not smooth micarta nor smooth G10, no AUS 4 or other such Columbia River nonsense. At least 440C, AUS10, (SPYDIE, SOG & KERSHAW Aus 6 is fine)

I"m thinking along the lines of either a Kershaw ENER-G Fixed blade (great handle) or a fixed blade version of the new Tarani 5.11 spear point Investigator. But around 7.5" overall length, tops.

Hey I second that, I been looking for a short, affortable fixed blade to carry for a while.

If its Byrd then I would get the 8CR13MOV steel, had that steel on the Tenaious and I like it. It gets a real nice razor edge.

May I recommend a style that looks like the Spyderco Street Beat? I like that knife a lot but its quite expensive. Same blade shape with a cheaper handle and steel would be great! But please give it a nice Kydex sheath.

I was going to buy a Kumo but for $140, I received a Leu Custom, Traditional Japanese kozuka, with a Kydex sheath. It's something to think about.

what type of fixed blade are you looking at? Would bowie shape? tanto shape?

It depends on the use.... for camp/heavy work, you'd need something like a machete style knife e.g. the forresters.., if it's purely for SD, then something like the street beat or the kumo style,

there are affordable options from other makers (namely CS comes to mind), but it depends on the use and style you're looking for.

The problem seems to be that either you get a somewhat affordable knife with 420J2, or you get a Cold Steel with maybe aus8 for close to triple digits!
I used to buy excellent Beretta folders in AUS8 for $28-30!

Maybe a function of the weakening dollar, I don't know.

But a fixed blade should be, and usually is, 'cheaper'. i.e. more affordable than something with moving parts and close tolerances.

I'd be fine with Byrd's current steel. I like it better than AUS 8.

A byrd fixed blade would be neat. I don't own any byrds, but I'd be interested in a small fixed blade. Maybe a necker.

hey dave, maybe look at the A.G. Russell woodswalker? It's a smaller knife with AUS 8 steel.

Don't forget about BRKT, they have some great small fixed blades. Posted a group pic for a size comparison with the BRKT PSK at the top, and a BRKT mini Canadian right underneath it.

BRKT=Great knives.

I may be wrong, but I think most if not all the Bark Rivers can be found starting over $100. I"m imagining a Byrd FB, simple design, choil or index finger protecton, 3.25" blade, non-slippery handle, same Byrd steel.
Maybe $79 retail, $49 street price. Just a thought....

Good idea. Maybe there's one in the works already...

There are some cool little FB's from CRKT, but as mentioned the steel isn't the greatest. My dogfish is rusting after very little use. That bead blasting just asks for rust.

I would love to see some small Byrd fixed blades.

A fixed blade under $50 with a good kydex sheath? I wonder if it could be done. You would have to sell a lot of them to get the economies of scale down enough for that sort of price. "A good kydex" sheath would take some hand fitting, I'm guessing. To mass produce a "good kydex" sheath would take a lot of new equipment and manpower. For under $50, I have a hard time imagining that.

I'd like a byrd version of the SPOT or SWICK. I think one of those bad boys in the $20-$40 street range would realy move.

If $50 is too low a ceiling for a kydex sheath, then perhaps a leather pocket sheath like they used to offer with the original non-Chinese made BlackJack small hunters. Would fit right in the back pocket, unlike those long generic cylindrical leather sheaths you usually get.

I'd like a fixed Byrd, too.

(Good little fixed one was the CRKT Ryan Plan B from AUS6, Zytel sheath. I carry it as EDC knife, along with a Mini Manix. :))

That is a good point. Mind you my previous post was purely speculation, but I was stressing "good sheath" over something like you might find from cheaper fixed blades. I imagine a good sheath like you might find from a a custom maker; and a bad sheath something like the Boker Fixed Subcom sheath (an OK sheath, but not great).

Silence from the folks in Golden on this question thus far...
Maybe Sal & Co. have something(s) in the larval stages?

There's always the Spyderco Moran at around $70. Buck has a couple, including the Mayo Kaala, as does BM. The Blackjack Small is another one. I'm pretty sure Boker has a couple. The Marbles Sport can be had in that price range if you don't mind looking around a bit. The Orion Knives K2 is one of my personal favorites. Queen has a couple in D2 that fit the bill. A.G. Russell has the Bird and Trout. CRKT has some Kommer designs that would do the trick as well as the Kaper. The Xikar Hunter has been discontinued, but is still in stock at dealers. I don't know how many of those have kydex sheaths, but all you need to make one of those is a sheet of kydex, a couple of rivets, a couple of hotpads, and a heat gun or an oven, so to me that wouldn't be a deal breaker. For what it's worth . . .

Last I checked the Mini and Mikro Canadian from BRKT are sub-$100. So is the RAT Cutlery RC-3. Think the Boker MPT and Subcom FB may meet your requirements as well. The Timberline Mini Pit Bull is kinda close... and is pretty nice. A G Russell Woodswalker?

However I would love to see a fixed Byrd, especially if it were around the size of the Dozier K-7 Companion or Mini-Canadian.
