Byrd Fixed Blades

Not trying to drift, forgive me, but I"ve never held the Boker. Is a 3" handle too 'short' compared to a 3.75" blade? How is in the hand?

hey diamdave, the knife feels like a big subcomfolder in the hand.... imo the handle doesn't fit large hand sizes too well, the unique handle is purposely designed to minimize "printing" and discomfort with carrying the MPT on the waist....best recommendation would be to try and handle one prior to purchase....seems like a loveit/hate it kinda thing ;)
here's Chad's description of the MPT:

50$ no sheath for a nice thin 4 to 5inch knife like a one size larger version of the mule.
I would rather have no sheath than a bad sheath. I am quite happy with the current Byrd steel. A knife half way between the Mule and the Buck/Strider Solution is what I had in mind.

I would much rather save some cash on the knife and buy or make my own sheath.
There are very few production knives that have a sheath anywhere as good as a decent custom sheath. I don't think a knife company can compete with a hobbyist who enjoys his work either on price or quality. At least not with a knife made to a price point like a Spyderco or a Byrd. Chris Reeve has excellent sheaths though.

is "stainless" an absolute neccessary feature?
If not, carbon steel will drive down the price quite a bit.
I can think of a good few selections that are affordable, come with Kydex sheaths, and are only a bit more than 50$ (like around 70 or so)...

Kabar comes to mind..

I mentioned in my original post I was thinking more of a blade length around 3-3 1/4" or so. I know there are several models of various knife makers in the 3.5"+ range. I didn't see a whole lot in the 3" range within the parameters I listed in the first post.

Hi Dave,

Sorry. Wasn't something we could do back then. Too many other issues at the time. We could probably do something now, if there is still interest?

I think there's definitely a market for small, medium, even large fixed blades with Byrd quality and value. Spyderco-esque ergonomics would be a deal-maker for me. I'd buy some!

I agree, I think there is definitely a market for a reasonably priced fixed blade from Byrd (Spyderco).

I'm interested.

The discontinued Swick and Spot were really neat. A Byrd knife somewhat like that would be nice.
Of a Byrd Bushcrafter. :)

I'm way interested

something like a swick or spot would be cool
something like the mule would also be cool

as long as it has good ergos and a useful blade shape at affordable price I would be in.

Jake Bauer brings up a good point. I've always wondered why some of my favorite folders didn't have fixed blade versions. Imagine a FB right in between a Delica and Endura size-wise. Say 3.3" blade,7.5" overall, flat grind, something you could carry in a city with a slightly more defense oriented profile than an Izula. Hell, I'd even love one with a 'santoprene' a la BM or 'kraton' handle like CS.
