Hey folks,

I bought a Byrd Meadowlard Rescue for my wife's car about 3 months ago. It's been sitting in the armrest compartment ever since, never used, and never exposed to anything more than ambient humidity. I did a bit of a spring cleaning on the car this week and when I pulled the Byrd out of the console I opened it up and noticed that the entire blade had very small spots of rust all over it, not pitted or anything, but rust nonetheless.
I was a little surprised by this, because I have a stripped RAT3 in D2 in my car, and despite the fact that I don't oil the blade or anything, it's spotless.
Sorry I don't have pics.
Not going to bother trying to clean it up or anything, it's for cutting seatbelts after all.

I'm not upset, or complaining, just an observation about the Byrd steel.

The backspacer rusted on a cara cara.. in the deep grooves.. with outdoor use.. But I never had any blade issues ..

Strange. I soaked a Tena and a Flight to saltwater for 9 hours - and after I took out the knives from the water, there were only tiny rust spots on the blades...

You don't happen to live by the coast, do you?

I've never had any of my Mini Griptilians rust--including being soaked, stowed wet, etc--except for one kind of foggy day near the beach where rust spots started sprouting on the blade.

I was able to polish them off with some oil and a rag, so it was just surface rust, and it's never happened since.

Either that happened, or it's more humid in that glove box than you know!

No, not even close to salt water. But it's been through the winter (i.e. car warms up, car cools down, repeat), so condensation may have been a factor. I basically took the knife out of the clam pack and threw it in the console in October.
The Mora that we also keep in the car has been there for years, no rust.
The rust on the Byrd may very well be removed with CLP or a ScotchBrite pad, but like I said, I don't really care, it's just a rescue knife.

i've been using my byrd pelican as a utility knife for 8 months straight (i'm a carpenter). only small pin prick spots. used on drywall, denseglass, wood, pencils, fiberglass insulation, cardboard, plastic, etc... . i've even used it as a chisel!, all in all, a great value for the $$$.:D

i bet some oil and a rag will take them off.

cheers, kimo
