I'm eyeing a few knives, I can't afford them all...
Which two would you get?

I have the M-type and I really don't dig it. Too wide and thin for my tastes.

I'd go with the Byrd Wings and the RAT-1.

I have the Tenacious, it's great, get it and you won't be disappointed.

Not a big fan of the Byrd Wings, just because of the two-blade design, but YMMV.

I love the CLB bokers, but I'd have to vote for the Ontario. I've been meaning to pull the trigger on that one meself.

All are decent knives... some more so than others. How do you feel about getting one really good knife instead of two so so ones?

I have a Ontario RAT and really like it. Nice and stout and sharp.

I had a Tenacious and got rid of it because I like the Persistence better.

Never owned an M-type but a buddy does and he likes it. It is nice a flat with a lot of blade for the pocket space it takes.

I had a Wings and didn't like it. It was just too fat for me to carry. Might do fine for a BoB or glovebox knife though.

I would get the Ontario and a Persistence, then you have a large and smaller option. ;)

Tenacious and the RAT 1.

Both knives are lighting fast to open. Both can take a really nice edge and hold it for a good enough time. Full flat grind on both, they both make fine slicers. I find that even though the RAT 1 is a larger folder it just carries very well in pocket I sometimes forget it is there. The Tenacious is a little bulkier than the RAT 1 but it is just a fun knife.

I'm probably only going to buy one of these 4 right now.
I find people's responses more useful if they are asked to, in effect, narrow the field, rather than make a single recommendation. For example, 5 people might have 5 different favorite knives, but if they all have the same second choice that would be good to know.

Out of curiosity though, what would you personally recommend for a similar knife in the $50-60 range?

Spyderco Native in VG10 can be had for less than 50.00. Just a thought...:D

If it were me, I'd save a little extra and get a made in the USA Spyderco, like the Native or Manix 2. But from your list:

  1. Tenacious - solid knife but made in China
  2. Byrd Wings - also made in China - not as sturdy as the Tenacious, but pretty close - the two blades are nice, but the set-up isn't as ergonomic as I'd like
  3. Boker Mtype - different than the rest - flat and carries well - flipper can be fun - discernibly "cheaper" than the top two in looks and feel
  4. Ontario RAT1 - never held one, but it's made in China, too, isn't it?

I would get 2 Ontario RAT 1 knives. One plain edge with no coating and one serrated with no caoting. Or two plain edge.

The RAT 1 model is the toughest knife for the money, and it holds a great utility edge.

I currently have all but the Byrd, enjoy them all. I just wish the Rat was in G-10. You might want to also look at the Byrd Cara Cara in G-10, great value. On your list I carry the Tenacious and M type the most.

I'd recommend the Tenacious because that's what I currently carry, but I'd be very curious to try the RAT1. I've heard nothing but good about it.

Very impressed so far with these two. I would recommend the satin finish on the Rat rather than the black but both are winners.

Ok, I am curious, why a satin finish over a black finish>

And head's up, Tenacious for $30 and Rat 1 for $26, which one would you choose as a first knife?

whoa old thread..

Color is just looks for the most part, but black coatings make it tougher to see rust if not help prevent it.

I'd get the Tenacious, purely because I dont care for Ontarios business ethics.

Of course, the resilience which is a 4.5in blade tenacious is coming out soon, and shouldnt be much more.. But for first knife, the Tenacious is a perfect size
