C-60 Massad Ayoob: Best Collaboration Model?

I've always preferred negative angle blades for most of the tasks I use a knife for.
Shorten the blade and handle by 1/2", and give it a non stainless blade - I'd have no choice but to buy one.
Add a beefy liner lock like the GB1, and I'd buy several.

Well "jpm2" you're kind of stealing my thunder but in a good way I might add>> because that makes three of you who make a great case for Spyderco to consider making a slightly smaller scale version of the C-60 Ayoob. As much as I dearly love and appreciate the original full sized C-60 Ayoob I would even like to test drive a slightly smaller scaled Ayoob model.

It would also be a great model to use one of the Supersteels with and even consider a Carbon Fiber handle. It would truly be an ideal, upscale EDC all the way. Not to mention the possibility of a Spyderedged unit as well

All this text and not one picture? :p

Still no GOOD pictures, but it's a start.

My man! I have a bad habit of scrolling for a picture on the first page when I'm curious on how the knife looks. Always sucks when there's 3 pages of text and everyone talking about how awesome the knife is and I'm left wondering what it looks like. Some rare blades don't always yield a google image result.

I would love a junior sized Ayoob. Here's the thing though...same blade thickness, liner thickness, and lock strength jus shorter handle and blade. That would be an EDC beast

Well you and I aren't the only folks that would like to see a smaller scale C-60 Ayoob model. Of all the past great Spyderco models the C-60 Ayoob is one I would like to see a smaller scale version more than any other.

I like all the options you mentioned but I would like to add either a Micarta handle and/or a Titanium handle with an anodized coating would also be nice. I would probably be first in line to get a smaller scale version of the Ayoob. I believe it would sell so well that it could end up being on the main line up.

Seriously I do wish Spyderco and Massad Ayoob would consider it because I truly do think it would be a money maker for sure.

I have never held one, but I do like the Ulize, a different collaboration knife. It is a bit longer and I am thinking not quite as strong of a curve as the c-60. Would be curious to see them side by side. If I am correct about the curve, the Ulize would be my preference in any size.

My Starmate has traveled around the globe as a tactical and practical user. I do prefer moving from a forward to a reverse grip as the situation may required in CQB. But, that is my preference and certainly nothing more. Also, the blade can hold up to some seriously heavy use. So, the Starmate gets my vote for best collaboration knife by Spyderco.

There is certainly nothing at all wrong with the "Starmate" model. Bob Terzuola's models are all well designed. But I do urge you to check out the C-60 Ayoob as a "user" because if you like the STARMATE you're going to just love using the C-60 Ayoob.

There are so many great collaborations that Spyderco has done that many cases could be made for many of their other great collaborations>> And no one is going to like the same models>> it's just part of being in the human race. But so far all of the guys that I've got to try out the C-60 Ayoob I have not yet found one guy that didn't at least like it enough to keep it. And most of the guys I let try one of mine just absolutely love it.

But again you won't hear me say anything bad about Bob Terzuola's collaborations with Spyderco>> I just like Mr. Ayoob's design a bit better that's all.

That's why there are so many options. Sal knows what he is doing. ;)

My other collaboration favorite is the Farid -

And I would be remiss not to mention the excellent Gayle Bradley collaborations. Mr. Bradley is a class act.

I will admit that I've had my eye on that Farid K2 model myself lately. I've yet to get a knife with CPM10V and I'm anxious to try it out. I've got a good friend that has the K-2 and he swears it's the best heavy duty Spyder he has ever laid his hands on.

Now I'm not trying to be a "fly in the ointment" so to speak but personally I'm not a big fan of Gayle Bradley's models at all. I've yet to embrace even one of them. But that's what makes us all different. You can see that there are some of the Brethren on this thread who don't like the C-60 model either>> but that's why there are so many to choose from.

But as far as ergonomics go I'll still take the C-60 Ayoob model over the K-2>> but I will say that the K-2 is very impressive for a heavy duty folder and I'm looking forward to checking one out.

That K-2 has a huge blade on it for a folder. How does it balance in the hand? Have you put it to use?

Yes - I use it when I carry it, and it is a beast but it carries well because it is very slim in profile. The handles, being thin, would be hard on your hands for an hours long cutting session.

The steel takes an excellent edge, and I have not cut anything with the K2 that would have damaged even 420HC, but the blade has remained very sharp, and the thin profile of the grind and thinness at the edge make for a very good slicer.

The height of the blade precludes this beast from being a good "apple carver", but still a very nice addition to any person's Spyderco user collection.

Here's a pic of all of them.... Terzoula Starmate was used for sizing. Do I have to say I love the C-60?

That's a great little collection you got there BOHAWG ;) I love the comparison of the old school Almite handled version against the newer Sprint G-1- version. It really frustrates me to no end that they didn't make the G-10 Sprint version in Spyderedge :( Because the Spyderedged Ayoob in my humble opinion is probably the most ergonomically usable serrated blade that Spyderco ever made in my opinion>> and that says a lot because there are a lot of great Spyderedged models that I dearly love.

I'm really holding out hope that someday they will do another Sprint of the Ayoob in one of the newer supersteels. I do hope that great design collaboration never dies because guys like me and a few others I could mention would be heartbroken if it did.

From an ergonomics standpoint I can think of any other Spyder I would put against it.

Out of curiosity what is the angle between the handle and the blade?

Simyo I haven't ever measured it to see what degree the angles are but I can say that when you're holding it that it feels like it's ergonomically perfect and it just feels more comfortable than about any other Spyderco folder I own. About the only model I can compare it to on a comfort level would be the C-46 Lum Tanto folder ( which is another one of my all time favorite Spyderco collaborations).

And that's not to say that many other Spyderco handles don't feel comfortable because many do>> but the Ayoob and Lum Tanto folder are both in a league of their own IMO.

The Ayoob blade and it's convex design can be implemented better than about any other folder I currently own.

What would some of you think about a C-60 Ayoob Sprint with one of the newer/better bladesteels. The reason I bring it up is because of the fantastic luck I've been having with my M390 Military model. I'm just going nuts trying to think of what the Ayoob model would be like with either M390 or one of the other new supersteels out there.

Now don't get me wrong because you will never hear me curse or say anything derogatory about VG-10 blade steel because many of my Spyderco users do indeed have VG-10. But with everyone here lately talking about many of these new Spyders with some supersteels like Cruwear, CPM-110V or even the new Nitrogen based LC200N for that matter>> I would love to try some of these old school Spyders with better blade steel.

Another thing I was thinking in line with the C-60 Ayoob model is that I've wondered a lot what it would be like with either a Carbon Fiber or Micarta handle? Some of these older models would make excellent Sprint Runs with new Supersteel blades IMO.
