Just a quick question.

I am in the middle of a trade with another BF member. I shipped out my half of the trade on the 19th of December and was delivered just before Christmas on the 23rd - I believe he was away from home at the time.

I received confirmation from him that he received it, was happy with the trade, and would ship on the 27th.

I have sent a couple of emails since then, asking for a confirmation number or the date that he shipped out. I haven't heard anything since then.

I'm not upset or anything - I know that the holidays are busy and he may be away on vacation. I know he has been on BF since the previous email (including today). I know we are only talking about two weeks time. All I'm really looking for is an update on what's up, even if something bad did happen.

How long should I wait before posting further information about who it is? Am I making too big a deal out of this?

Thanks!

Personal opinion, if it's not someone you know and trust I'd probably be concerned by this point. To me lack of communication is a definite red flag and it's been nearly two weeks since he said he would ship. Hope this one works out favorably for you.

If he has been on a couple of times including today and has not given you the courtesy of a response to any of your emails then I see nothing wrong with posting up his Bladeforums user name and real name and just asking for the update addressing him directly in the post.

You aren't accusing him of anything by doing that but just asking for an update. If he doesn't like it, tough, he should have replied to your emails.

Hopefully, if he has decent feedback he is just a procrastinator and you will get your end of the deal but in the last year or so there seems to have been a rash of thiefs and scammers join up just to screw good folks out of their stuff.

If you've seen him on here and he's not responding, there is reason to be concerned after 2 weeks of no communication.

Thanks for the replies. I figured that I was being impatient, as that is how I am with almost everything. I wanted to wait a bit - I'm a college student, working full time, blah blah, and I know life happens...however, once I saw he'd been on BF, that prompted me to ask.

He has a 100% feedback score, with 3-4 total feedbacks.

I have read many threads on here that starting a negative feedback thread, even if it has the best intentions and a positive outcome, can lead to people not trading/buying from the individual.

I am going to try and contact him again, both through BF and emails, and if nothing pops up, I'll post more info. I really don't want it to come to that. I have all the papers on the shipment, and a list of all the emails...

Thanks guys.

I would be pretty ticked off if he can go on BF but does not have time to respond to you after having received your end of the trade over two weeks ago and promising your knife to be shipped 8 days ago, unless you specifically agreed before the trade that he could do that. If Christmas, vacations, or whatever are in the way, he should not have time to poke around on BF, he should be doing the right thing by you.

Sorry if this sounds strong, but I have seen WAY too many flakes and thieves on the forums lately.

I totally agree. I have sent several emails, just asking for an update. I completely understand that stuff happens (even though I have read that the same excuses tend to pile up) and would be totally willing to wait even a month's time if there is some sort of communication.

I haven't had to take any deal to the next level, if I even can...

IMO- you should have recieved your knife the same day the other member recieved his because A. he should not have entered into a trade if he knew he was going out of town, and B. he should have shipped his knife on the same day as you did (unless of course he is a longstanding, trustworthy member with a lot of good feedback, which I doubt, given that you are posting here about him.)

That said, if he said he would ship on the 27th and did, he should have sent it priority, insured, with a DC # unless you agreed on another method of shipping. If he did, you should have the DC # (which you don't because he stopped communicating. And also possibly went on vacation during the trade, instead of completing the trade after he returned home, postponing it, or not even entering into a deal in the first place. One does not go on spur of the moment vacations so we can easily assume that he knew he would be away and out of communication. Pretty poor form at least...

That brings us to the fact that it is almost 2 weeks after he said he would ship and you don't have your knife, a DC or tracking # or even an email from the guy. Barring a family emergency, illness, hospital stay or death, there is no reason why life should "get in the way" to prevent even a quick email saying "I'll get your knife out ASAP sorry."

Give the neg. feedback, post his username, real name, email, and shipping address and inform him of this thread. There is no excuse for you to wait 2+ weeks for your end of the trade while he has your knife in his hands the entire time.

He never responded as to how he was shipping, just that he received my end and would ship out the following day (he was going to ship on the Monday after Christmas, PO was closed, and he said it would ship Tuesday).

He may have shipped first class or even parcel post, which would take a lot longer to get here...but again, an email saying this would be great.

I'm compiling all my info right now, I'll post it in a bit. Thanks...

Alright. He was on today around noon, he should have seen the emails I left and the VM as well.

The trader is Clay Cavender (c@vem@n). He has been on BF since I last heard from him, as well as trade another different knife off. The trade was for his Bark River Little Creek for my Wetterlings Wildlife Axe, plus 50 dollars.

I shipped on 12/19/11, DC number is 03111660000090028362. It was delivered on the 23rd. I received an email from him on the 26th stating that he got my end of the trade, was happy with it, and would ship on Tuesday (27th).

Clay Cavender claycavender@gmail.com

12/26/11

It will be heading your way tomorrow then. It was good doing business with ya. Let me know if you wanna trade something for that Fallkniven A1?

Sent from my iPhone

Since 1/1/2012, I have been sending emails asking for a shipping number or update on when he would be able to ship out...I have heard nothing since then.

The thing that really irritates me...not only has he had time to get on the forums and trade another knife, but that he has been using his iPhone to send emails... in the first slew of emails we sent (mostly just talk and chatter about knives), he was very quick to respond back to my questions/comments...if his iPhone is anything like my Blackberry, he receives the emails I send pretty quick from when I sent them. I wouldn't think that it's unreasonable to check emails every few days or so, especially with the lack of a smartphone...

I'm going to give him a chance to give me an update on what's going on, before posting his address and leaving negative feedback. I hope that he has just been slow to respond and either shipped the Bark River via a slower service, or is planning on shipping soon. I'd either like my end of the trade back, or the Little Creek, as per our emails. I'd gladly send shipping money to him, for either case, if that's part of the problem.

Thanks to all for your insight and help on this so far...

***I attached a document containing every email up until now...it's password protected. If you want to view it, send me a PM, I'll get you the password asap.

I sent him an email with a link to this thread...

I do have USPS insurance on the package, could I use this to help get my package, or the value of, back? If you could send me a PM or email about this, that would be much appreciated... (I am still going to wait a bit to give him a chance to let me know what's going on, just asking for future reference).

he has 37 posts and is not a paying member (no financial investment in BFC=less to lose) and has only been on Bladeforums since May, 2011. You should have had him ship first. You're a long standing and paying member. Hopefully this clown wises up and gets your knife overnighted to you before he can't do business on any of the knife forums again.

Heads up, c@vem@n. This stuff spreads like wildfire and the knife community is tight knit.

http://www.facebook.com/clay.cavender -this is his facebook page. It is the only Clay Cavender from Fayetteville Arkansas. The Deliv. Conf # shows delivery in Fayetteville Arkansas. He seems to have a lot of religious quotes on there. His bladeforums profile says "God is good." Doesn't God also say "thou shalt not steal?"

ETA: according to his facebook wall, he was in perfect health on the 27th. He had a little chili heartburn just this last friday, maybe that is why you still don't even have a confirmation number for your knife....

I have plenty of information, including pics, just from this guy's facebook page if you want or need them. PM me. I am going to try for home and work phone numbers next.

ETA: i have phone numbers for places of work for his wife, maybe she can put a fire under his ass if he doesn't man up and return your property that he has, by this time, stolen...

every one of his posts are in the trade forum except for a couple- another red flag...

Your right, I should have had him ship first. He had a few successful trades and had a few posts, but I have never had a bad experience till now - I guess I was a little excited for the Barkie and got a little complacent. I'm still holding faith on this one, since he's around somewhere.

To all the forum members who have contacted via email/PM, thanks for your help so far. I have heard nothing from Clay and I'm starting to doubt I will. I have left negative feedback, maybe that will get his attention. It's also looking like I'm going to eat this one as I am unsure on how to proceed to get my items back. Hopefully Clay can respond to this thread, or any of the emails I sent, and let me know whats going on.

Postal Inspectors may help.

How long to wait? Friday I think is long enough. Then I get to jump up and down and throw things. These scammers are getting to be a real disgrace.

I can do that (the jumping and throwing, of course)! It just seems so stupid...all it would take is a "I'm shipping on Friday" or "I'm returning your items"...

Clay contacted me today. Apparently, he was having financial issues and is now going to ship his end of the deal to me. He made it very clear that he made a mistake and that he wanted to do right by me. He's going to send a shipping confirmation number by tomorrow.

I want to make it clear that while I was nervous that I wouldn't get my items, I was more concerned about the lack of communication. I am more than willing to wait for an item, even if it's a couple of weeks. The fact that I had no idea what was going on, and that it was well past when I should have received the items (from when he said they would ship), was what I had a problem with.

I will update this thread when I getting the shipping number and items. Thanks again to everyone who helped me out on this, it was very much appreciated.

You sir are a lot kinder than I. In my opinion he should have NEVER engaged in any kind of deal if he was having financial issues sufficient to hinder completion of the deal. While his action is short of scamming, it is complete irresponsibility.

Agreed. That sad thing is that, for me at least, one email would avoided all of this. I know I said that earlier, but whenever I sum this whole thing up, that's what it came down to. I know that "Hey, I am having money issues and need a few days to ship" scares most people, at least a little, especially in light of all the bad trades that have happened before on BF. However, a simple response like that goes a long way when you haven't heard from someone in a while.
