Soul, difficult to define but you know when it's present. Sometimes you hear it, other times it's seen, most times ya simply feel it. Harleys, Ducatis, Lamborginis, Smith & Wesson, Colt .45s all got it. Some knives have it others don't.
Reading recently that a certain knife lacked soul I began looking at some knives I had on hand, trying to determine if they had soul.
Eventually concluding that for me the more soul a knife had the better, whether that soul was imparted through years of use, modifications or was part of the original design. It also seemed that some had more than others.
The following are some of those that IMO have that certain something we call soul. Let's see the cutlery you feel has that certain something and emits a bit of soul.

Soulful Yankee Jack - get it's zest from it's uniquely beautiful Macassar ebony, modified bolster and years of amazing service.

15's have it and this one's soul was elevated when glennbad glennbad added some interesting and grippy stag

Most Puukkos have it in spades, especially if their handles are made of birch bark like this Todor Hristov.

...and of course there are many, many other knives that have soul.
I think it will make an interesting thread if you'd like to show those in your collections you feel have that certain something!
Agreed. Nice thread. Will be interesting to see the knives that show up here.

Great thread James, some may scoff at a knife or an inanimate object having "soul" but that's what I call it. Others may call it character or any number of things. I say soul because it's the life experiences I live through and that "certain" knife was with me through memorable times or it's just a faithful companion or a reliable tool???

The TC came to me on my birthday in 2013, it was carried EVERY day for 14+ months, by itself or along with another. It's been through funerals, weddings, birthdays, great niece's recitals, evenings on the deck after a hot, long summers work day, winter blizzards doing welfare checks on elderly family members and any and everything almost imaginable.

The Case 62087 is the very first knife I bought, I owned many before it but they were either given to me or found. That Case I saved for over a summer or more and was bought with my allowance. Carried daily when I first bought it and used more than any other knife. The fear of losing it forced it out of the rotation along with years ago a broken tip that I re-profiled, but of late I decided to bring it out. Lately it see's more time on my desk because I want to keep it around and give to one of my two sons.

So yeah, to me, certain knives have soul. I own others that qualify but these two are at the top

If we are talking about Knives with Soul, I have many, My great mates that I have made over the years in here have really taught me a thing or two about the decent side of Humanity, their gifts are extremely important to me - I am scared to start naming people for if I miss one, its just not fair, but not only when my friends who have gifted me the most important thing - and that their friendship and trust, their Knives they have gifted me are huge to me, so this is what this Thread means to me.

In this Shot here- Charlies two Walnut TC's to the Left- Not only has Charlie been a mentor in many ways to me I also consider him a friend, Charlie on the other hand may well consider me as a stalker 🤪 his welfare is my concern, when we talk about the TC's- they are a very much loved Knife- I only own half of what I did, I still own quite a few of the ones I will never let go- Charlies Soulful Knife the TC's are special to us because of the way Charlie goes about life - a most respected man by all- so that is just one reason as to why the TC's are treasured, but getting back to these Walnut TC's, these were made from a Piece of Charlies Dads Walnut that Charlie had kept and obviously treasured it's existence, Charlies Dad handled this wood, Charlie treasured this Wood for the day, the Treasured Walnut TC's was made from the Campagna heritage - these are Soulful Knives.....

Another soulful Knife:
One day I was lucky enough to be sitting around a Table with my really good mates Dave Gentry and Paul Hilborn, this was a neat table to be sitting at as the Seller was Tom- what a guy - a very likable fantastic guy- Augie and his lovely Wife were at the same table at one stage- as this was the GEC Rendezvous that I had the pleasure to visit again Paul and both of us fly down/ drive down to be there, meeting Dave was only a matter of time as we were mates before we met I was glad to finally shake the mans hand,... the day before this sitting, I saw this gorgeous Case Stag Folding Hunter, Tom who owned them and had the most wonder array of Knives for sale, but that he was just wouldn't budge from his price, me- I hurt when my NZ dollar gets halved to buy anything US, so man...did I try to chip him down- Nup... Tom wouldn't move- you cant get angry at Tom because of his wit and charm - just made the experience awesome.....

Next day... Paul, Dave and I sit down at the Table... "My" Stag Case is still there and so is Toms Grin - darn him...
I try again and no... he wont move but then I am not too sure as to what happened - but Tom must have felt sorry for me when I was wetting my pants from crying so much 🤣 , but we were having fun kindly insulting each other throughout the bargaining process, he said "right $50 off that's it.".. I was stunned! He actually moved!!! he didn't have to move - he was just in the moment - But Then..... Dave and Paul both smacked down $50 on the table each too - all those guys put that much for me, honestly...I have tears in my eyes typing this out.
I protested as I was Humbled deeply - Dave - I'll never forget this said in his magic way " Just shut your mouth and take it" 😂 Oh it was so humbling , so funny and such a magic moment that the Knife was only the small part of this whole thing, of course I did what I was told and came home with this wonderful knife.
Dave and Paul - you guys Rock!, Tom matey- you are a awesome guy and hope to bump into you in a couple of years at Oregon ?
The next day at the Queen Show I came across another Case Stag Hunter, the pair are here, the 1970 Dot Stag Hunter is another Soulful Knife.....

The Knives gifted to me, I know each one - gifted and treasured and to all of my friends who have done so, I still have those knives, always will and will always treasure these wonderful Soulful Knives, I thank you literally as I pick up each and every one!

Looking thru my collection of knives while songs like Ray Charles version of 'Georgia', or Jerry Lee's "She only woke me up to say Goodbye', play in my head.
I'd say this one embraces that feeling for me, Pal Cut cattle/punch recovered in rosewood and a new shield.

Or maybe these two as well, Case whittler and GEC Churchill.

England, sitting in a Cafe was a wonderful feeling, for many reasons, it was a damp Grey day and sitting in a warm Cafe at the very Historical old Town of York that has such old heritage was a warm and wonderful feeling.
York is a wonderful amazing Town, back to and beyond the Vikings who settled in York - its a place that I call rich with History, that day I met up again with my really neat Pal Jack Black, Jack again was another friend who I hadn't had the pleasure of actually meeting in person until we met up in Sheffield some years earlier and Jack treated Sue and I to such a memorable day, so here I was again, on completely the other side of the World, with my pal having a coffee.

Jack is a wonderful Human, he cares so so much about so many things, he doesn't want the World to forget the wonderfully amazing days of the past - especially in Sheffield, but all too quickly the modern man are too quick to tar-seal over the Hundred year's old Cobblestones, and move on with modern day life, instead of doing so while treasuring and showing the old pride and maintaining the the wonderful history of what was at one stage one of the most famous industrious Cities in the World.

Jack made had me walk around Yorks great old Wall with literally pockets full of stunning, wonderful knives, pounds of metal added, pounds of chub lost that day as Jack was so generous to me.
This wonderful Knife is a soulful Knife, the years of hard work from Jack working with the few remaining Cutlers in Sheffield to re-ignite their passion and to get back to taking real old Sheffield Pride of what was and to place this back into their work and uplift some of Sheffield's hard worked for status of the worlds greatest Cutlers.

The Knife is a result of this from Jack, just one of the Knives gifted to me, as much as the gifting was amazing - in fact it hit me hard, but the work Jack has placed into the being of this Knife - is what makes this knife Soulful...
Thank you jack my friend....

This old Boker has seen many days under the sun, I rescued it from a pile of mostly relics in a flea market, as soon as I laid my eyes upon it I knew it needed a loving home. It was covered in a thick tar of (my Guess) dried tobacco juice when I got it, but the 91% isopro bath revealed these well used blades. The well aged bone covers have so much character...I wish I could see what it looked like when new. This knife lived a life of hard work, and it still has crazy sharp steel left to do more...

This is a great thread!! Soul!!!
Some knives have it others don't.
I carry this knife about one third of the time!! Ever since it was born in late 2012!! I am lucky to have one of its Safe Queen siblings to compare it with; It's been through a lot, but it has a long life ahead of it!! It has stayed sharp for long periods of use - once about 3 years!! The steel is a "cut above"!! Ha Ha!! Maybe you can see it has worn down about 5-10%
It has taught me about knife-aging - a real education, and it's a faithful companion! Indeed a member of my family!!
Everybody knows, it's got Soul!! ;) Old Boiley plus 1.jpg

These 3...kind of inexplicable...the ruby red because its the first GEC I ever bought.
Down the bottom "Ol Pondy" the algae coloured dye job has grown on me as if with some therapeutic power.
The burnt bone Schatt n Morgan stockman...an unexpected greatly valued gift from Fodderwing Fodderwing ...At the time xmas 2018... I think the devil had taken my soul ( instantly regretting it of course) I had bought a SnM large stockman with orange burl scales as a Xmas present to my self ...I woke up that xmas morning alone and severly depressed...on a mattress on the floor of my rented room...I felt something crawling on my skin under the sheet...a cockroach ...easily 1.5 inches....on my back under the sheet!!...This is IT for me! ..was what I thought.
So I opened my present I had been saving ...was I clinging to bygone happy xmasses with the kids? One of the scales was quite warped and lifted at the bolster...I fixed it as best I could...
I think I posted it for advice ...and Dwight sent me the burnt orange bone stockman you see above....Is it possible that St Florian lifted me up with that gesture of Porchiness and dare I say it? Brotherhood...
Well look at me now
