Cabelas Alaskan Guide S30V Hunter

Maybe it's time for an embargo of Cabelas. It's probably only a matter of time before we'll be able to get S30V knives from Buck or from other retailers. Hopefully without that coating.

On Thursday, August 29, 2002, while visiting the BUCK facility in El Cajon, San Diego, CA. I was given the opportunity to meet with Mr. Chuck Buck. Mentioning that I used to live in San Diego as a student and now I had come from Greece was a door opener. At first, he thought that I wanted him to engrave a knife I had probably bought but I said that was not the reason for which I wanted to meet with him. During the meeting that took place in his office, I suggested to him that it was time for them to move on to better steels. In particular, I mentioned of the CPM technology and made reference to CPM S30V. He was impressed and I promised once I was back to Greece I would forward him all the data I had available on this steel. And that’s what I did.

Obviously, he went ahead and used this steel in the creation of the Mayo folder.

All and all I strongly believe that we need to push forward with what I initiated back then. The steel used on the current BUCK knives is not bad, albeit, it doesn't even come close to steels from the CPM family or even D2 or M2. As I already stated to Mr. Chuck Buck that day in his office, I believe that it is about time that BUCK knives move on to some better steels.

Somebody might think, "Well, that's fine but these will be more costly knives". I will agree with this thought but here is what I also have to add:
1) The outcome will worth the extra cost
2) As I mentioned to Mr. Buck that day, they may opt to go with a limited edition at first, see how it goes and then put it in regular production.
3) They can also do what Sal Glesser of Spyderco does: post an honest question to the BladeForum in which to ask their clientele if they would buy this knife or that knife at, say, a 10%, 25%, 50% or 150% higher price if that is the case. Then, they could take the answers, evaluate them and move on.

As for the embargo on Cabela's :thumbdn: , well, I think you hit the nail on the head! I'll second that  !

George

It seems to me that Cabela's policy is a blanket one. Instead of relying on a call center employee to read a list of which countrys can get which items they just say no knives shipped abroad.

A 110 with an S30V blade.. I WANT ONE ! But I live in the UK. I contacted Cabelas about the Alaskan Guide knives some while ago and got the same response from them as you guys have had. They say they cannot ship the knife to me. Worlds Foremost Outfitter my a$$ ! Knifeworks sent me 2 Benchmade Pardue Rant Drop Points, a Buck 110 and a Cold Steel Trail Master last month, no worries!
I for one will NOT be buying ANYTHING from Cabelas until they can sort their act out. Consider that I fish, I shoot, I hunt, I trap, and I love good knives they could well be doing themselves out of quite a good bit of business with me on this one.
I'll wait in the hope that Buck realise that there's a market for them and start producing premium steel 110's for "general" sale. Not only will I then not have to buy it from a company that seems not to know it's a$$ from it's elbow, but I won't have to put up with that coating OR some naff logo on the blade.

There is a company in Moscow. They make bussines by buying staff ower Internet for Russian customers from their US office, taking care of shipping, paing etc. Customer fill some form prepay some part of price etc. this is not for Cabela's only, but for any US web based stores. So in Moscow you can actually buy almost everything from Cabela's. May be there is some company in UK who can deal with this "Iron Curtain" ;)

Thansk, Vassili.
