IMG_0165.JPG Salvaged this face frame from the neighbors trash. I think it is oak but not sure would it make suitable scales? Can someone confirm the wood as oak?

It's definitely oak. Kinda plain but would make solid handles.

Good oak has "tiger stripe"
Have a good look you might find some. That would make a nice handle
And something I wanted to try but haven't come to yet is fill the pores with contrasting colour

Oak makes durable, stable scales. I've used it a lot. But those are very plain pieces. If you're making a burly outdoor knife, probably a good choice, if plain. It does have large grain, so be prepared to sand a seal a bunch. Quartersawn pieces tend to show more figure. You might have a fancy section in there somewhere.

Are you thinking of quarter-sawn oak? This cuts along the radius and through the medullary rays giving a wavy or flecked pattern in the oak. Highly prized for furniture. Red and White oak have the best quarter-sawn figure. Leopardwood and Lacewood have some of the most dramatic medullary rays and sycamore can really look amazing as well. I've even encountered some quarter-sawn cherry that looked amazing.

Tiger stripe, quilting, fiddleback, flame are all figuring in maple caused by "waves" in the grain formation.
