I started forge welding a cable into a billet and had to stop during the welding process. I tried again the next evening after letting the cable sit in vinegar for the night to break up scal and was not able to get the cable to stick. My other attempts have been sucessfull. Could have stopping in the middle of the process caused my second attempt to fail for any reason?

Thanks

John

I think that if you knew you were going to stop you should have just fluxed the cable and let it cool down. The flux should have protected the surface until you got back to it. At least this is how I have done some "regular" damascus billets.

Your vinegar etch just took your nice iron surfaces and coated them with oxide,
you should have either finished your weld or finished your weld, or maybe finished your weld. If you really have to walk away, melt in borax and let it cool
