January, 2009 Winter Camping Trip
From January 17-19, 2009 ( MLK Holiday) we will be having our 3rd winter campout. This trip is open to all. This year we will be near Elizabethtown, NY, just off the Lincoln Pond Road. Depending on how much snow we have, we should be able to drive pretty close to the site (with 4W drive). We will be near the main lodge of the Sportsman Club but most of us will be camping outdoors. It is a beautiful site and right in the High Peaks area. We are fortunate to have a good friend who has made the arrangements for this trip. Thank you Hayseed (Jerry).
These winter trips can get pretty cold so anyone contemplating on coming be sure to have proper gear. I will add more details later. If interested you can e-mail me at wlcwe@localnet.com I like to have an approximate count. We usually have between 12 to 18 folks coming.

A couple of guys are going grouse hunting on this trip. We are going there right after Christmas to check out a good place to camp. More info coming soon.

I've just deleted the past events and am looking to fill this calendar up again. Lets see some trips planned guys.

The Southern MI/Norther OH get together has got me thinking.

I have a small place on Little Portage Lake in SE MI (Jackson Co./Waterloo State Rec Area). I know its a bit early but I'd like to get a get-together/meet-and-greet going for spring '09. Waterloo State Game Area has a 22 mile hiking trail and a couple shorter (.5 to 2 mile) trails.

With deer firearm season going on right now and limited access to my cottage until spring, I'd like to throw this one out early. There are several lakes in the area if anyone would like to do some canoing/boating. Some are no-motor lakes. Others are all sports lakes. There are state shooting ranges near by. Fishing is plentiful with everything from panfish to walleye and pike.

Here is a link to Waterloo State Park/SGA: Waterloo SGA

If anyone would like to get together for a spring hike/fishing trip, just drop me a line at Rupestris@gmail.com

I have a small sportboat (like a canoe with a transom & outboard) that seats three. that will be available as well as the cottage (sleeps 6, maybe 8 if you don't mind bunking with another W&SS member:p) if the weather turns bad and no one wants to rough it. Camp sites are available as well.

I'll work on getting a date set and update this post as needed.

For something unique, I'd like anyone that attends to bring an item for all other attendees. For example, if eight people show up, it would be awesome for all eight to bring seven like items to give to the folks that show up. Nothing expensive. Just something that you feel is useful and can afford.

If you have a bunch of fire steels, or power bars, or whistles, bring enough to give each person one.
No minimum value. No maximum value. Just something that you'd like to share with the others that show up.

Thanks for reading,

Chris

Winter Camping Trip
After doing a scouting trip this week to the High Peaks we've all agreed that there is no way that we can get up there for the winter campout. We have moved the location to Chateaugay, NY. The biggest problem we have with other sites we have looked at is finding a place to park a dozen or more cars. Anyway, we have a great place up here with plenty of wilderness and tons of firewood. If anyone needs directions, just email me at weteachu@dishmail.net

The final count is 18. We are going to meet at Felions Restaurant in Churubusco, NY at 9Am on Saturday. We'll have a great breakfast and then head on over to my house. Anyone who gets in later can go right to my place. We should be back by 10:30AM and leave from there.
Right now they are predicting some really cold weather by then so come prepared. Jerry has got the food all organized. We have only 8"s of snow on the ground right now but they are expecting 4 more by tonight and possibly a couple of more small storms by the campout.
See you all real soon.

I'd like to have a get together here in southern Ohio, Dayton area. There's an area that's perfect here, about 1 mile from my house, so no worries about parking. I'd like to wait until the weather warms up some, maybe late March or so, depends on everyones schedule. The area is near a dam and there's a reservoir at the camp area. It freezes during the winter and is great since you can walk across, cutting your hike time down a little bit. If anyone has a canoe, feel free to bring it! I'm trying to get one right now, myself just for this area. It's not a state-designated area, so no firearms, though pellet rifles, blowguns, and other mall-ninjary would be fine. Lotta squirrels and even more cotton tails are around there for a stew! Fires are fine, never had a problem. No size limit to the group. I'd like to have it Friday until Sunday morning, though if people can't make it until Saturday that's fine too. Pretty good sized area to make shelters of different material, as there's a variety of flora for such a small area. I'll be tarp camping myself or maybe a homemade one. Feel free to bring the kids as long as they won't be a hindrance to everyone's good time. My 12 year old son will probably be there. The younger kids won't be there for reasons understood! Feel free to bring all the steel you want!

Email me at screwthe49ers at gmail.com for any questions or post them here.

PEACE 22-25 May 2009 (Memorial Day Weekend)
(People enjoying another campraderie experience)

Peace is a free (rendezvous/gathering) event, open to all. It’s all about camping, survival, knives, the outdoors and meeting like-minded folks for a really good time. This is a family friendly event, children and friendly dogs are welcome but you are responsible for their behavior. You are also responsible for your meals and garbage. What you bring in you bring out. Light drinking is permitted. We have a drinking water source and clean outhouses for your convenience but no showers. You can come for the whole weekend or just a couple of days. What ever fits into your schedule? Some folks even come up a couple of days earlier but I have to warn you that if you come up earlier we may put you to work setting up.
During the long weekend we have a variety of seminars on survival and the outdoors. Some of the past events were an air rifle shoot, sling shot competition, survival kits, wild plant walk, wilderness first aid, knot tying, fire making contest and a staff slinging competition. Were still planning for this year. Saturday afternoon we will have a swap meet. Bring anything you want to sell or trade that is outdoors related. A potluck supper is planned for Saturday evening. We are always looking for folks who would like to do a seminar or any other ideas to improve this event.
We also have demonstrations going on during the weekend. The last two years we had Garrick Malone a Flint knapper extraordinaire. Also some dealers will be selling their survival wares at great prices for you.
We have our own 500 plus acres here in Chateaugay, NY with plenty of space for tent or RV camping on the grounds but no RV hookups. Don’t forget your folding camp chairs. We also have 4 different fire pits for primitive cooking (if you so desire). Each night we will have a huge campfire to end each evening. Somehow the campfire seems to be the most memorable part of the event.
Anyone wanting to come can e mail us at weteachu@dishmail.net by April 30th. We like to have an accurate count. Last year we had over 50 folks.

If you read the post on hogs, dogs, and gators, you may know I recently inherited 160 acres in the middle of BFE, MS. Its a mix of pine, hardwood, swamp, and a 8 acre bass lake. If anyone want to have a meetup, just let me know, and I'd be GLAD to host. It's a great place that is perfect to hone our skills. Anytime, just say the word. Must NOT be allergic to beer.

Babel Tower Bush Bash,

Mar 20-22nd, Linville Gorge, NC

Update with Turn-by-Turn Directions for CA Bush Bash I (courtesy of Lambertiana):

[...] This is how to get there:

I am assuming everyone can get onto eastbound 198 from 99 at Visalia. Proceed east on 198 past Visalia. You eventually get to a stop light on 198 that is marked Exeter/Rt 65. Set your trip odometer to zero at that intersection, and continue east on 198.

At mile 9.0, turn left on 216 toward Woodlake.
At mile 9.6, turn right on Dry Creek Road
At mile 26.2, turn right on Stagecoach toward Eshom/Hartland
At mile 28.5, turn right toward Hartland/Eshom
At mile 33.7, ignore the right hand road, continue straight
At mile 36.4, turn left on the dirt road. The campsite is 0.1 mile in.

There are no other roads turning off of any significance - just ranch and private property roads, most of them with gates.

The dirt road has deep ruts. My Subaru made it no problem, and another guy who was with me had no trouble with his 2WD minivan. You just have to straddle the ruts.

I borrowed a friend's GPS, and this is what I got, standing in the middle of the clearing:

36 degrees 39.557 N
118 degrees 57.403 W

11 325196E
4058666N

From my house in the western part of Visalia it took 75 minutes. [...]

Just remember that the turn onto Dry Creek Drive is immediately after you cross the bridge over the Kaweah river, which may or may not have water in it. That spot is right below the dam, and the river only flows when they decide to let some water out.

The official dates for the Western NY gathering are August 15-16. Bring the family, friends, knives, bows, sling shots, air guns, fishing gear, and of course your survival gear. My wife is having Aortic by-pass surgery July 1st so I had to move it to later in the summer. I hope many of you can attend. Feel free to contact me with comments, questions or what ever about this gathering. You can email me at sales@dpknives.com. See you there. Doug
