California Dreaming

“You say almond, I say almond, almond, almond, lets call the whole thing off” … there is a whole bunch of people who have no idea what we are talking about…kind of like Belushi singing the original … “tomato, tomato … “
It's familiar but I can't place it.
I'm guessing Marx brothers, though I'm not actually that familiar with their work.

Not sure who ever said "potarter", "erster", and the rest of it, but it's a classic song! 🤣

When I first lived in Scotland (St Andrews) in 72-73, I remember my parents had some Scottish friends over for what we called dinner. I can remember the after dinner conversation being about accents. There were a lot of Americans in St Andrews studying at the University and particulalry the graduate schools. The Scottish folks said they could tell if an American was from California or somewhere else in the US by how they pronounced roof. They said Californians said roof and the rest of the US said rooofff.

Well I always heard they were almonds (pronounced all mends) when in tree but to harvest you had to take a big stick and beat the “L” out of the tree at which time the nuts dropped and were now almonds (pronounced amm ands).

Oh really Dave? That's funny :D I do enjoy accents and local dialect :)

I've always loved both the taste and smell of almonds :) That's fascinating about Blue Diamond Almonds, and some great local knowledge! :D ;)

🤣

That's a real shame Dave :( It seems that just about all you guys had a 110 when you were youngsters, certainly an icon

Here in the valley I have always heard this phrased as a joke...Why do farmers call them amonds instead of almonds? Because they shake the L out of them.

For those who haven't seen it, almond harvesting involves a low tractor that grabs the trunk of the tree and shakes it hard to knock all the almonds off the trees. Then other vacuum vehicles pick them up off the ground. During almond harvest the entire valley is shrouded in dust, and my wife's asthma is really bad. Sometimes when driving down the freeway by almond orchards, the dust is so thick it is like driving through a dense fog and you have to slow down due to limited visibility.

That sounds like a really interesting harvest method, I had no idea  Sorry to hear about your wife's asthma though :(

A bare week ago, I received a PM from Tyson A Wright Tyson A Wright , saying that he and his wife had a California care package for me :) I was amazed when it arrived today, and thrilled when I opened it

Tyson and his wife have celebrated Yorkshire Day with great enthusiasm the past couple of years, and it was so thoughtful of them to share something with me like this. I love to learn more about where my friends here on the forum live, and the two beautiful books enclosed are going to teach me a great deal.

There's also an incredible laminated guide to the raptors of Western North America, and a 2023 calendar to put on my wall :)

There's some tasty-looking almonds for me to snack on while I'm learning too, as well as a couple of cool California fridge magnets

And, as you can see, Tyson enclosed a knife for me too :) I was in my teens when I first read of the US 'Buck Knife', and like many folks in Europe, Buck were one of the first US cutlers I'd heard of. As we all know, this iconic knife took the world by storm, but all we saw over here, at that time, were cheap knock-offs and imitations. I wouldn't have carried one of those, but I'd have given my eye-teeth for a genuine Buck 110. Strangely, while they became available here, years later, I never actually got round to picking one up. Sometimes, someone would post one here, and it'd bring back memories of my teenage longings, and I'd think I should get one at some point. But now I have one, and a very special one I think :) It sure is one heck of a knife, and I can see why it really shook up the knife world in the 70's, and why it continues to enjoy such success

Thanks to Tyson and his good lady for their kindness, and for taking me back to being a teenager :) Maybe I need to get a motorcycle again ;)
