California is frustrating!

Zzyzzogeton, i agree in theory but unfortunately without going to court, there is no way of getting a knife back (even going to court doesn't guarantee it). It is my experience that proving a knife is legal is way more difficult than the courts proving it is not legal.

As far as living in Cali, it's temporary but like they say "there's gold in dem hills"

California is all screwed up, and is too far gone to recover. I had a California approved CCW Permit for many years, and was told it was only as good as the Counties, or Cities anti gun policy I was carrying in! San Francisco is the worst place to try, and be lawful IMHO. As weirdos get away with everything, and tax payer get treated bad.

What? Do you have a problem with people getting married naked on the steps of city hall?

Out of curiosity, what county was you permit from? I have a friend who has one from Orange Co., he has had it for a several years (he's a prosecutor so no political favor there, he has legitimate good cause), I hear it varies greatly for "regular" people getting them depending on what county you live in.
