California Stoopidity -- knife suggestion

I'm worried about it because I live right in the middle of the most socialistic, anti-weapon crowd in all of America, without venturing into San Francisco itself, that is.

I'm not worried so much as being cautious. People in California don't mind their own business, especially here. Give it enough time, and someone WILL call me on that funny-looking clip visible in my right-front pocket.

Now your being paranoid. I've lived in (and carried a knife in) Los Angeles most of my life, currently live in Santa Monica, visit schools quite often, usually with some kind of knife clipped to my pocket.

IF you act like a suspicious paranoid gun nut whacko/knife nut, like you are making yourself out to be, you bet people are going to scrutinize you as such. The solution is simple: don't pull out your knife, and chill out.

This isn't really hard to do. Consider this: Cigarettes are also banned on campus. To follow the letter of the law, you can leave the pack of cigs in the car. Realistically, you can just not light up on campus, an nobody will know any better.

I think that 2 1/2" blade law has been around forever, at least it was there when i was in elementary school in the 70's. It must harken back to a time when being in a gang meant greasing your hair and carrying a switchblade.
The weird thing was that at UC, carrying a big lockback was legal but all the little paring knifes we all had and cake cutting knifes the secretaries used were technically illegal.

I just picked up a Victorinox Farmer after hearing all the good things about it here, it is indeed a very nice SAK. I would also consider a Spyderco UK Pen Knife, discontinued but still available.

My thoughts as well. The Spyderco might be hard to find. The Vic Farmer is an awesome knife, though if you don't need the saw a Vic Soldier or a Wenger SI is a good choice. I have seen a Farmer modified to have a pocket clip (using a clip off of knifekits.com), just drill and tap the Alox scale, cut the screws to length, install and it is good to go. Farmers have more than a 2.5" blade though. Amazon usually has really good sales on Victorinox knives on Fridays.

I have a Wenger Evo S17 (like the Evo 18 but with a locking blade and a corkscrew instead of a Phillip's screwdriver) and it is an awesome knife, it and my Farmer trade EDC jobs
