Call for Charpy toughness samples

I am currently in possession of a nicely stuffed box of charpy samples from Warren the heat treating machine. Looking forward to getting them ground fro testing!

The issue is this:
My lovely daughter in law is with child and 3cm dilated with my first grandson and only grandchild. My son, the father, is simultaneously trying to pass a 3mm kidney stone through a significantly smaller tube! I May be distracted for a bit, but I'll get them done ASAP! All well wishes and kind thoughts appreciated.
Best of luck, and congrats on impending grandparent-hood!

Heat treating x50crmov15, A2, PSF-27, and S35VN today and tomorrow. Will be in the mail to Larrin this week.

daizee daizee your PSF-27 is in the LN as we speak...

Can’t wait for that x50crmov15 to be toughness tested, because I have my eyes put on the Wildsteer Waif bayonet and it’s made in this steel (but closed die forged, not stock removal).

Here are some preliminary numbers on the steels I've been working on. These hardness numbers are As-quenched after cryo, before tempering. A bit of a flyer on the PSF-27 at 1850f, as it read slightly higher than makes logical sense, but it was only a single coupon and so only one data point. Let's see how the numbers look after tempering and testing the rest of the coupons.

What was your soak time on the S35VN?

You set the oven for 25F over, then inserted knife, then waited 10 minutes and started the count for 15 minutes?

Wow, my jaw literally dropped at those A2 numbers. Any idea how much more hardness you get from cryo with A2?

Those are from cryo. The Crucible datasheet says 64 Rc without cryo.

I preheat the oven to 25 degrees over Aus temperature, then switch it to the right temperature right before I insert the coupons. It takes about 10 minutes for the temperature to equalize, and then I soaked it for 15 minutes afterward.

Ok that may explain why your heat treatments are acting like they are performed from a higher temperature than mine.

It would be nice to have mill certs so we could see if there are chemistry differences. Its interesting to see that possibly different technique makes a difference.
I agree, but so far I have found it to be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to get the mill certs for many steels. It's possible I'm just shopping at the wrong places, though.

Great to see these results!

I’m behind again on my current steels. I’ve been fighting the flu/cold/laryngitis for weeks now. I can’t shake it, so I’m staying out of the shop for the time being as dust exacerbates the symptoms. I’d like to hope I’ll feel better by the weekend, but I thought that last week too.

I’ll get to them ASAP.

Keith, I forgot to send the two extra M4 samples to you. I’ll just include them with the next batch of steels I have ready.
