No, not that one but an excellent book by a Scots chap, Guy Grieve. He gets sick of the 9 to 5 in the Edinburgh publishing world and decides to go and live in the Alaskan wilderness.
A great read, lots of survivalesque action, quite a bit on equipment and guns.
However, to Guy a knife is just a knife so no real details. This is ironic as his knives ( he seems to carry at least two fixed blades at all times) literally save his life. Twice.
Just thought that the good folks here would really enjoy it.

Just to clarify, this is a non-fiction book published by Hodder.
Full title is 'Call of the Wild My Escape To Alaska' by Guy Grieve.

It's been ages since I've read that book. I may have to give it another look; however, while on the subject how about some suggestions as to other survival based fiction? Don't mean to hijack your thread only expand it's potential ;).

For me it was HATCHET. I read it in 8th grade. It was a very good book also a movie about it. Forgot the name.
