Calling all Bowie pics! (Also post fighters..)

I'm not ashamed to admit that I have no than THREE HI bowies in my office desk drawer here at work:D

My go-to sticker, however, is a Gerber Mk II. It's a recent one with the ugly serrations, but man what a balanced purpose driven knife. I've got a lot better knives, but that Gerber is just about perfect in hand for its intended use. I'll sometimes carry it on my belt at 7 o'clock as a weak hand back up to my pistol. If I had to ever use it, I think it would be considered a mutually bad day for both me and the bad guy.

I keep my V-42 Stiletto on my nightstand for much the same reason. Plus no matter how I grab it I can use it effectively. I considered a kukri, but you have to grab kukris in a specific way to make them effective. Something sharp and pointy, just grab it and get to the point.

i keep my orc knife on the night stand.

A friend of mine from the UK makes some fine fighters. :D I would have to say of the ones I have seen they are THE correct version. Can anyone tell me which in the picture are original Wilkinson's and which are Paul's?

Fantastic. This has been a very productive thread.

That's easy, Paul always marks his with MacDonald Armoury so they can't be mistaken for originals. And I have to say it's funny that you count Paul among your friends. I've never communicated with him directly, but I correspond with the owner of Fairbairnsykesfightingknives.com, and he counts Paul as a friend. At one point he sent out a Christmas email and a few modern makers of the F~S hit reply to all to add their wishes, so I have emails from them now.

Since stwm was asking about modern makers, I have heard good things about Peter Parkinson's work, Paul MacDonald's (MacDonald Armoury), and I've heard the new Sheffields are pretty good too.

The HI Cherokee Rose.

WOW! Tex, that is outstanding!

Looking at a v-42 replica, sheffield f~s,kabar famine tanto, kabar combat knife, becker bk7, ontario sp1, ontario marine raider bowie, or an ontario m7 bayonet...maybe a throwing tomahawk.. my khukuri are so good they have all the chopping and dismemberment handled so I want something puncture-y to round out the stable.

honestly though I have a hard time getting excited about anything that isn't from Auntie... gotta use this amazon gift card on something though!

I'd go for a Ontario OKC-3S bayonet instead of the M7 bayonet. It's a stronger design, more versatile, and in demonstrations has made it through soft ballistic armor, and aluminum, and still made it into the punching bag underneath them. In fact, I'd consider it on its own and not just comparing to the M7.

I can also say from experience that the M7 blade has a lot of difficulty making it through something like thick denim. A while back I did a test where I layered cardboard together, and then stabbed into it. In bare cardboard my M5A1 bayonet (which has the same blade) penetrated deeper than my V-42 by a lot, but when I put 4-8 layers of denim the M5A1 didn't even make it through the denim, while the V-42 penetrated to the same depth as it had in bare cardboard. The F~S design, including the V-42, is such that it seems to ignore the presence of clothing when it comes to stabbing depth.

Scara you are saving my life. I am so glad I put all that out there. How does the OKC-3S compare to a V42/F~S?
OKC-3s looks a lot like the KaBar or an Ontario SP1..right? How does it compare to an m9?

It's pretty much a modernized Kabar. More modern materials, and more ergonomic handle. It's certainly more durable than a F~S of any sort, as it doesn't have the fragile tip of the F~S, and it cuts a lot better. I can't speak to its comparative penetration in a test like the one I mentioned above, but I do know that the Marine Corps tested the OKC-3S by stabbing it through a ballistic vest and aluminum simultaneously (I don't know the thickness of aluminum) and into a punching bag beneath the two. I have my doubts an F~S would fare well in that test. The most the F~S was designed to deal with was a Soviet greatcoat, which was the thickest garment used by any belligerent during WWII and is just very thick wool. All that said, the F~S is still a good design: elegant, beautiful, and effective within its role.
