Calling all computer geeks...

Yeah, 32-bit maxes out at 4GB of RAM. Need 64-bit if you want to go with more.
Actually while 32 bit OSs max at 4GB, that amount includes ALL the addressable memory, including the BIOS and video RAM. So most of the time it'll be 3-3.5GB of system RAM remaining and addressable.

Speaking of ram, I'm surprised I only saw one computer with more than 4gigs so far. Ram is cheap nowadays. When I get a Vista worthy (or windows 7); it'll have at least 8 gigs of ram. Ram seems to be the easy upgrade that helps the longevity of computers.

Pardon the mess on the desk, I didn't bother cleaning it.

Dell XPS 710, 2.4ghz dual core processor, 4gig RAM, 250gig SATA HDD, 120 gig IDE HDD, 16x DVD burner, Nvidia GeForce 8600GTS. The sound card is an OLD SoundBlaster Live Platinum that I've had for about ten years, I love it, it sounds great and supports surround sound, why upgrade?

Computer's two years old, but it'll run anything I've encountered very well, and the motherboard will support a quadcore processor and up to 8gig of RAM, so I'll be upgrading this machine for a while.

What kind of ipod do you have?

What kind of ipod do you have?

An old 4gig second generation Nano. It was the best $200 I've ever spent. 90% of its use is in the car though, where it's running into an Alpine CDA-9884 head unit (and out of Subaru's crap stock speakers :grumpy:, they're getting an upgrade relatively soon).

I have iTunes installed on the 10,000 rpm SATA drive, and all the music is on the much slower (5600 rpm I think) IDE drive, so if I try to listen to music on the computer I get some skipping from time to time. But that's ok, I have a very nice stereo system in the living room that I run the iPod through for home listening.

And if anyone's interested, the guitar in the picture is an early 80's American Standard Strat. Probably the best neck Fender ever put on a Stratocaster, but the stock electronics sucked. It's been upgraded with Texas Special pickups, so it's got a very deep, rich tone and is incredibly easy to play with that neck. Awesome guitar, but I still like Telecasters better.

lol. well, I'm definitely still a bit of a computer geek. I recognized your graphics card from the photo before even reading the specs. Its the color and those anodized memory sinks that do it.

i installed the aluminium memory heatsinks :D
anyway, since you recongnized an 9600 radeon, you must know the games of the time , and before that time :D
great period

yep, I've got the same ones and one of those zalman quiet coolers (or whatever they're called) installed on the 9600 I put in my girlfriend's computer. When I bought it, it came with a download code for the yet to be released Half Life 2. I think that year also saw Far Cry, Doom 3 and probably a bunch more I can't think of at the moment.
