I just bought an edge pro apex 4 , It hasn't even arrived yet and im already looking at accesories, I have a zt 0300 that is going to be the first knife going on that bad boy when it gets here, but I think i need the half inch stones for it, so heres my question do the half inch stones fit in the regular stone holder that comes with the edge pro or do you haft to buy something else to go with the half inch stones so they fit in the handle??? Or do I even need the half inch stones at all for the 0300 since it is kind of a gentle recurve any input will be appreciated and thanks in advance!

The half inch stones fit without buying anything else, but you don't need them for that knife. Just pay attention to how the stone contacts the edge, and don't use too much pressure (or you can dig the edge of the stone into the knife, but that can happen with the 1/2 stones too).

Hey Allen, as long as they are mounted on to the metal slabs like the per stones it comes with, you should had no problem. Try it first without the 1/2" stones and see how it goes. Don't forget to put tape on your blade (everywhere but the edge obviously) so you don't scratch it up. Use a dry erase marker on the edge to make sure you are hitting all the way to the edge and creating a burr. If you have any questions feel free to email me dcmartin2001@gmail.com

Patience is a virtue when sharpening knives. If you rush it, you will certainly make many uncorrectable errors. You really should practice on a junk knife before attempting to put a perfect edge on a $200+ folder. Just my opinion though. Some folks tend to rush things and end up aesthetically destroying a knife.

I was gonna sharpen a buck 110 then my beater endura first, then i was gonna hit the zt with a full on reprofile,

oh and thanks guys for all the input, it should be here next week and I did say i was gonna do the 0300 first, but i was gonna do a few cheap knives first just to get the hang of it , then ill move up to the zt. thanks because i was gonna buy those half inch stones but ill wait, another question I dont really wanna spend 50 bucks on that glass circle to flatten youre EP stones what do you guys use to flatten your stones with if not the round glass thing on the edge pro site?

The sharp edges of the stock EP stones tend to get in the way with recurves. You can use a diamond flattening plate to round the edges a bit.

EP stock stones are inexpensive enough to have a set of regular stones just for use on recurves. You don't have to step down to 1/2" stones.

There are advantages to the bigger stones, and no downside.

I have no problem sharpening most recurves unless they are really severe, such as karambits or Kriss. I sharpen my Benchmade 710 recurve with no problem using the stock stones.

I went and got a piece of ceramic tile from local hardware store to flatten the stones when they need it I saw a guy do it on you tube and it worked , it also sharpened my knife!lol $.89 vs $50.00 for the edge pro flattening glass thingy i think i made a wise choice

You could have even saved the 89¢... Flatten the stones on a smooth piece of cement block or cement sidewalk. Many of the Master Knifemakers I see here in Japan use sharpening stones that look more like hammocks. I've seen some bellied down more than 3/4" below the ends of the stone. When using the small EdgePro stones it's more important to keep them flatter, but there's no need to be obsessive about it. I've seen some posts where people talk about flattening after every few strokes... I'll flatten when they get down a few millimeters. No problem getting perfect edges. I use a flattener that I bought in a local hardware store for about $5

That seem more reasonable .89 versus $50. Good idea, I just got my EP and was wondering about how to flatten the stones w/o spending $50 !
Free is good to and i have a some flat concrete patio blocks kicking around so that's what I will end up using, no doubt.

I live on the 6th floor of an apartment building. When I wanted to flatten stones I would go downstairs and use the sidewalk. My wife suggested buy a concrete patio block but when I got to the home center, the dedicated flattener was cheaper than the damn patio block! LOL! Smaller too, so convenient to keep in my sharpening closet!

so i very recently got my edge pro and have some random questions......

- i notice that sometimes the blade will wobble..... could i just use a C-clamp or some other low profile clamp to keep it still??

- if i cant use a clamp How do i stop the wobble??

- i have sharpened 4 knives with varying degrees of sucess, bigger knives turned out better (not great either) but how long until i get good at this thing?? (nutnfancy on utube says 10-20 and I am about at 4)

- how do I know when to go to the next stone??

I often use a clamp(s) although a lot of people may tell you not to. When I find something that works 'for me,' I tend to ignore people telling me that it's 'wrong.' It gets the job done. It's easy and simple. It works, especially with very small blades such as the pen blade on a Swiss Army knife. You hear a LOT of people saying they can't sharpen such small blades on their EdgePro. With a clamp, it's easy. You just need a small jawed clamp.) The edges I get are all the proof I need.

Two ways;
1. When you've raised a burr along the ENTIRE edge. This becomes more difficult with the higher grit stones, so you can use the 'Sharpie' method at that point.
2. After a bit of experience, you will 'feel' when the stone is 'just reaching' that burr stage. Different feel and different sound.

kenstogie, (Don't laugh)I don't count the strokes but I think I listen to the sound the stone makes and when it sounds smooth I change to a finer stone, also the stone will slide over the blade with a less of a grinding feeling. I can't believe how sharp I can get a blade with the edge pro. It was definitely a good investment. Holding the blade and keeping the angle steady is a big part of sharpening.

Allen R. I found the best stone to reprofile a blade is their Fine diamond stone(I know they only recommend diamonds for ceramic knives), but It cuts the fastest then I finish it with their regular stones.

got in moretime on the edge pro and it's getting easier and my edges are getting better and better..... at least with the longer straighter blades like my butcher knives and so forth. The little ones tend to move any tips on handling the littler blades?? EDIT: the smaller knives are now getting easier too. WTF?? Now I can finally have sharp knives that slice paper into little slivers. Stropping is next!!
