Calling all parents!

me and my cousins have carried knives since we were 5. Both started with slip joints. Mine was a SAK alox soldier (whick is still sitting here on my desk!). I think my one cousins was a Buck trapper.

We both got THE KNIFE TALK from dad. Which was repeated every time we cut ourselves (or something we weren't supposed to). Yes, we did cut ourselves. That was a part of learning. We learned what you could do and what not to do. If you cut your self the knife was not taken away, you just got a talk. If you cut something that you weren't supposed to (such as the porch railing :) ) the knife was taken away for anywere from a day to 2 weeks. Depending on the offence. Cutting yourself is an accident, cutting on the porch railing (I can still feel my dads belt from that one:eek::yawn:) is something you should know not to do.

Good luck on the FIRST KNIFE JOURNEY:rolleyes:.

Well Said from a fellow with an EXCELLENT first name;).

My mother-in-law is a teacher at a local elementary school and she teaches 2nd grade. It is legal for a student to have a pocket knife here as long as it is "not seen" or "displayed in a threatening fashion". She has no problem with her students and the pocket knives. I would say if she with all her experiance with children is ok with it than you should be safe.

Again I agree with everyone else, depends on the child/youth/man. I know some adults that have less business with a knife or gun than some children.

But what do I know I am but a child myself at 23!

That seems like a decent rule. You can carry a knife as long as you behave yourself. Really nothing different from the rules at home.

Unfortunately there are always kids that should be taken out of the reproduction system, and parents too.
Lets say you have a school and half the kids carry pocket knives and multis in their pockets or school bags (if you want to open a paper box, it doesnt kill you if it takes ten seconds yo get the knife out) and everyone is ok with that. Unfortunately there is that gang that harasses everyone and for some reason the school can not give them a crash cours in behaviour skills. One day the expected thing happens, one of the goons use his knife on a decent student. The reaction from politicians and ignorant parents is to make knives illegal at school. Then the knives are banned for decent people but it didnt effect the bad guys anyway. If the school had dragged out the kids on the school ground and tied them to the flag pole and flogged them and their parents the gang mentality would end in ten seconds.

I got my first knife when I was 4. My Dad gave me a Buck 110 knockoff, bigass knife for a 4 year old. My Dad is the worst knife user that I know of, he does stuff with his knives that I wouldn't do with a hammer and crowbar. :) So needless to say I didn't get any good lessons with the knife, Dad just told me not to take it to school. Anyway one day I was stabbing it into a log trying to make "eyes" for the fine sculpture I thought I was crafting. The lockback broke in half and the blade folded on my fingers nearly severing my little finger off, I still have the scar. :) When Dad got home he took the knife away and I didn't have or want another one until I was around 9, then my parents gave me a small lockback knife for Christmas one year and I was much more careful with that knife, used it for years until I lost it in the water fishing one time. Moral of the story, buy you kid a quality knife and teach them to use it and there shouldn't be any problems.
