when i saw the prototype of this folder i fell in love immediately as im sure most of you watching have. after finally biting the bullet and purchasing this knife i was a bit underwhelmed with its novel spring detent mechanism. it was extremely hard to deploy the blade out of box by thumb flicking, spyder dropping and even centrifugal force/gravity opening. i spent the last week carrying it daily and dare i say raping the knife by opening and closing in what felt like an excess of 2000 times. it slightly broke in and became smoother allowing me to deploy the blade with my thumb and a slight wrist flick like a lock back knife. i still wasnt satisfied, this was a compression lock afterall and i couldnt stand it not being as smooth as my other compression lock knives. i bit the bullet, voided my warranty and decided to break down the knife and molest its inner workings. my first idea was to slightly bend out the compression lock bar to relieve some of the excessive tension against the tang of the knife possibly making the knife smoother when opening. it was extremely stiff out of box so i was sure it would be fine with a little tweaking. that however was a feeble attempt as there was a steel plate on that side of the liner preventing any kind of over travel... why? i dont know lol. my next idea was to simply remove a few coils from the spring. ive done this with other things such as firearms and its a great cheap easy fast way of reducing spring tension. success, i advise you to go slow snipping half coils just as i did and reassembling the knife and testing function. the spring detent is all thats keeping the blade closed so dont trim off too much if youre a detent whore. i'd be glad to walk those who are interested through it and just drop me a pm or email if you are. happy modding :)

Nice to see people who have the stones to void the warranty... And pull it off!

Cool idea bro:thumbup: I really need to get a Szabo on of these days.

I can proudly say that every knife I carry has been taken apart numerous times. You've gotta explore the bowels from time to time:)

If you know what you're doing, that stipulation on the warranty shouldn't be a problem. Generally, the warranty is voided if you take down the knife and break something because of it. If they are so against their knives being dis-assembled and are so anti warranty, they wouldn't put torx screws in there and instead have pins and save them from people complaining about stripped screws. There's room for tinkering and modding. A voided warranty for opening and breaking something in the process isn't so alien is it?

Don't break the knife while YOU are playing with it and your warranty should be fine.

haha man i liked the looks of the szabo so much when i saw the proto. i literally had a hard on when it arrived but upon opening i immediately went flaccid. i knew it would come to tearing it down but wanted to try youtuber nutsforknives example of breaking it in. goose egg, that went nowhere and i would have a long white beard before it broke it enough to flick close.

awesome knife, if you do get one... do the mod.

ive been told personally by charilynn? charlene? (her name slips me) from spyderco cs that any knife taken apart is void of warranty ;)
i suppose if you were a dishonest person they wouldnt know...

I'm still not sure if taking the knife apart at all voids the warranty.
I've read and re-read the warranty and it says "damage caused by abuse or carelessness will not be warrantied" it also says "damage caused by disassembling the knife will not be warrantied".
Nowhere does it say "any taking the knife apart will not be warrantied".
It simply says damage caused by taking the knife apart won't be warrantied.

Sooo... does taking it apart really void warranty or does taking it apart and messing it up void warranty?

Anyways, nice mod. I think the Szabo is a really cool looking knife. Not sure if I'll get one or not yet.

the szabo is great! i highly suggest purchasing one if on the fence. its as close to a military with compression lock myself and others have been praying for lol. its blade shape is funky but the slight recurve and belly make it a decent blade for edc use if you dare carry such a large spooky knife :).

Yeah, I guess they also just cant say it is only voided IF you break something as they also would not know who's being honest when they receive a knife all taken apart.

I opened my ZT 0560(when I had it) no matter where I was, so big and scary looking with weird looks is no stranger to me lol. I don't see them as scary, but other people do.
I've gotten a few looks when it comes to my knives.

looks never bothered me.... until i edc'ed a rajah II for a day :)

Bro I live in your area, people's gotten weird on me with blades like a mini grip. You edc Szabos etc. in the cities or when out on the boonies?

i live in sf man... theres plenty o freaks here that a rajah buldging in my pants pocket goes unnoticed lol. coworkers... hell my boss has seen many a strange things they dont care about knives anymore. in fact, ive sold a knife to 90% of my peers at the office :D

How does the Szabo's handle feel? I read that it was intended as a reverse-grip fighter & disregarded it despite liking the unusual blade.

the handle is quite comfortable (and generously sized lol) if you dont mind the finger indentations compared to the smooth handled military. they both really feel quit similar in hand even in reverse grip. there is a slight ramp for reverse grip thumb placement but i dont think that justifies classification as a primarly designed reverse grip fighting knife... i just thinks that uber kewl tactilol marketing :)

I do the same thing
am I the only one that's ever dropped a pivot screw and almost had a breakdown;~?
