Jason, I just talked with a friend of mine who was up in the Seven Devils Mountains, west of Riggins. He was there elk hunting. (Killed a nice 6x6 bull.)

He told me there are already about six to eight inches of snow in there at 6,000 feet, with more falling and more on the way this weekend.

Nights at 6,000 feet where he was camped are presently in the low 20s.

So, in regard to your trip into those mountains at the end of the month take this into account, as there is no doubt you'll be "snow camping," and it'll be cold. ;)

Just thought you'd like to know.

Be prepared.

Today, I spoke with someone out of the Hells Canyon Wilderness Office in Riggins. He said that they did get an early snow and that there is no way I would be able to get back there by the end of the month. I guess I missed my chance for the year.

I'm currently trying to decide on another location for a short trip, but I doubt anything I can come up with will compare to what Seven Devils would have been.

Got any suggestions?

Jason

JASON - "Got any suggestions?"

Jason, I can't really help you with that, as it all depends on what you want to do with camping overnight.

By the way, you do have a camping/hiking partner going with you, don't you??

Do you just want to "sleep out," or do you want to practice some outdoor skills? Building a fire in inclement weather, etc., or perhaps some map orienteering? Emergency shelter constuction? Perhaps some campfire cooking?

Not too much you can do on just an "overnighter."

I suggest you look around at some of the Nat'l. Forest camping areas north of Spokane. Or, you might check the country east, into Idaho, around the Coeur d'Alene area. They're much closer to you than the Seven Devils Mountains. For just one night, those areas might be a possibility, although again, the weather could be a factor.

Best of luck.
