The recent “calling Cliff Stamp” thread practically devolved into a “calling Cliff Stamp names” thread. People indicated that other views are worthy of notice and, despite my hero worship of Cliff, I’d like for Joe Talmadge to answer the same question, which I’ve blindly copied and pasted below, with minor editing. Joe I hope you will respond and appreciate your knife sharpening threads and articles. I know my knives are finally sharp again.

“I was just wondering if you could tell me what your personal favorite top two or three knives are and briefly why. I know everyone has their own reasons for why they like one knife versus another and that's fine. However, I think you have had more exposure to more knives than most people, and so in trying to capture a little of the breadth of your perspective, without limiting your selection to any particular style/type of knife, what are your personal favs”

I like whatever Cliff picked

*ducks for cover*

Seriously though, my "top two or three" knives change constantly, depending on what I tend to be doing most at the time. I haven't been doing outdoorsey stuff this winter, and I tore some tendons in my left forearm so I haven't been training, so right now what's been on my mind are more general-purpose knives. In a couple of months, my list will likely change to more specialist knives. But I'll try to remember to whip something up when I have time later. In the meantime, I think the point of the critics of the last thread is that perhaps this should be a general question to everyone -- though I personally am only interested in seeing replies where each knife chosen is accompanied by a description as to why it was chosen (ala Cliff's great response), rather than reply after reply of just a list of 3 knives.

Joe

Joe have you found upgrades (in general) to the Endura, Deehunter (possible BRK&T) and 710, Calypso Jr., in each class (inexpensive zytel worker, light precision fixed cutter, general heavy work folder, precision folder). Knives you would generally pick over those directly in the majority of cases to the extent you would basically move them out of rotation, aside from reference work. Do you still have a place for blades like the Ontario machetes having used large goloks?

-Cliff

I'd think the TTKK would have to be on Joe's list if only for the name. However, it's a good looking blade too, I've never used one. :) I'd give my list of 3 or so but i'm not Joe. :)

Maybe we should have similar thread for anybody to participate in if they have over 1000 posts to bladeforums. Just a thought

Post numbers dont have a whole lot to do with actual knowledge, than actual "hot air" :o post counts are just that, post counts. A few fellers here with 5000 posts and been here less than a year, no names, ya know who ya are. :p :D

case in point = me.

I'm practically an arm-chair posting freak...don't know nuthin bout nuthin.

:D :p

you've had a whole month longer than me to make those extra posts. :D

but, 8000 extra posts??????? ;) :p

Dwayne, some people are busy working and some people are busy talking! :D

(I'm too lazy to work.)

LOL!! :D Ya got me there! ;) and your post count is just disturbing. :p

Sorry for the late response, but here's what I've been loving lately:

ZDP-189 Calypso Jr: I've always loved the Calypso Jr., and frankly I'd be singing its praises even if it were still made with 8A. One thing that I love about Spyderco is how, as they increased the quality of the steel, they took advantage and increased the quality of the edge geometry. Feel a ZDP-189 edge versus an 8A: Spyderco thinned out the ZDP-189 and let it do its stuff. I still feel there's no real competition to the Calypso Jr. High-performance gents' scalpel without peer.

Rinaldi Disciple: If it were summertime I'd be singing the praises of the Rinaldi TTKK, but my TTKK has seen mostly kitchen work during the winter. Instead, I've been training with and admiring the design of the Rinaldi Disciple, a knife designed soley for defensive use in pakal (reverse edge-in) grip. The knife and sheath are like a clinic for overall-design, from the placement of the point and edge geometry, to the handle, to the sheath option which allows a convulsive grip without breaking the wrist, to a size which make the knife carryable. Couple it with two fantastic training DVDs, and it's killer. Pic here: http://www.mdtactical.com/shivworks.htm

Okay, is it permitted to pick a knife I haven't handled yet? I've always loved the endura series. I have a waved endura 98, and I absolutely love the wave feature. I also have an endura 4, and feel it's the best evolution of the endura. I predict the waved endura 4 will quickly find a place at the top of the heap for me. Until then, I go back and forth between waved endura 98 and regular endura 4, with the waved '98 usually winning out.

The AG Russell Deerhunter also remains a favorite of mine Just love the performance of the thin blade. I would very much like to get a custom with a super hard steel which has the same type of very thin blade, but haven't pulled the trigger. I've also been enjoying a BRKT Fox River for outdoors work, obviously in a bit of a different role than the Deerhunter, since the Fox River is more of an overall camp knife and less focused on being a super thin scalpel.

In a few months, this list will change, and I'll have new favorites. Would be good to have an occasional "what are your faves" thread, provided each person includes explanations...

Sal,

I know I'm in for a ZDP-189 Calypso... to follow the ZDP-189 Delica4.... which will follow my current baby, the regular VG-10 Delica4...

;)

Joe, I'm a little bit off topic, nonetheless...I've your sharpening FAQ (great job, BTW) dated 1998.
Could you please direct me to an updated version?

TIA

I think the general forum and blade forums as a whole are for the masses. The only problem I have with the other thread you started titled, 'Calling Cliff Stamp" or this one is that you don't normally post a question to an individual on a public forum that is for everyone. You do that in a private message on a one on one basis.

If it is posted here openly then it should be addressed to everyone that has access to the question just out of common decency IMO. Addressing it to just one guy is counter to the purpose of the forums. I'm surprised you have so many replies from people when it wasn't asked of them. Until I read about the controversy in the first calling Cliff thread in your first post I never even opened it up to look at that thread because it was not something inviting anyone but Cliff to respond.

So, in answer to the concern of it being turned into a get down on Cliff hour I would say you set him up for that. Why not ask him the same question in an email since he is the only one you wanted input from and then you wouldn't have to worry about it at all?
