Ok....I saw this, and I can't quite believe the claims, but I don't know enough to back up my doubt:

Super Steel on Ebay

I cannot believe for one second that something with so little carbon could harden to 62RC. Is there something else in the listed composition that could explain the outrageous claims? How can you modify 4340 to measure up to the hype? I'm guessing you can't, but want to be sure. Mostly I'm trying my best to understand a teensy bit of all of this metalurgical stuff...

Thanks,

They only list the composition for 4340 not their modification. IIRC Carpenter also makes a 4340 Mod used in aerospace applications with VERY impressive properties, some of that from special HT. 4340 , on it's own is very good steel and modifying it makes it considerably better. As far as a knife it still lacks the carbon for good wear resistance. Even with standard 4340 you can get 57 Rc.

Hrmmm...so, is there any reference for that -61 mod to 4340? I'm guessing not since it's "propriatary". I'd bet that any special HT is a pretty big secret as well...

It is interesting to know that some of these "super steels" do exist though. I suppose it's hard to tell when the BS-o-meter should be pegged...

It's good to question things :D
