Calling off the search for my missing Scarab, time for a new EDC

Well, I feel it's a bit unfair that no one has said this, since we always give the noobs this line...

What's your budget and what do you plan on using it for? *ducks*

Indeed.

I've got a few choices. I really don't want something "stock" though. I've debated taking one of the new Benchmade 586 limiteds that came out at SHOT because I really like the black aluminum / micarta.

The BM SHOT show offerings are always nice, I've owned a few of them.

That model would lend itself well to custom scales as well if you wanted to swap out the stock ones at any point.

If it were me, I think I would go for either a Matt Diskin Fire or a G&G Hawk Links. Both seem capable, cool and classy.

Threaten to perma ban Laconico if he doesn't move you to the top of his list and get a small Jasmine flipper.

Damn Kevin. You must have lost it right after I was in the shop and bought the Kershaw camp knife because you had it then. That's weird. I wonder if Panda ate it. Keep an eye on those stools.

I think I know where it went! Check your pockets Gavin!!

Just kidding. Hope you don't mind me joking w/you a bit.

No worries muphasta. Once you've been to the forum that should not be named, anything that happens in general is pretty mild. :D

What about that Russian family, the ones that make the ti handled knives? Shigorov or something, those are supposed to be very nicely done.

Shirogorov. I got to handle one of them Saturday. Extremely impressed. It is hard to improve on perfection. The one I saw was a bit larger than Spark's looking for, I don't know about the rest of their work.

I just picked up a Brous Division Flipper in Carbon Fiber / Satin D2. Definitely bigger than you are looking for, but if Brous had something similar, but smaller, their fit and finish is perfection. Seems like everything they put out is "limited" so it won't be something you see in a lot of pockets.

Okay, I just looked, and unless they offer a smaller version of the T4 or Division in a smaller size at a later date, not much there I'd be interested in. YMMV.

Yes! I'd love to see one of those in person. I really like the aesthetics of Shirogorevs. They might not have the hard use vibe, though.

I just got a spyderco PPT and am loving it!

If you want to stay microtech I've been uber-pleased with my Mini-Matrix as well.

I think this was recently released:

Do you have any handle material preferences?
Ive found new love again for my Native 5. Deep carry clips can be aftermarket and some new handle scales and you have a "Spark custom Native 5".
eschwebach has a sweet-lookin custom Native 5 that can be seen in the "EDC" thread.

There's also the Benchmade 940-1 in CF and S90V (Benchmade's first use of this steel).

I own lots of custom knives. My usual rotation is mayo/hinderer/jw smith +/- a custom slip joint

I must admit that one of the most useful knives I own is the spyderco stretch. The carbon fiber version with the textured scales is hard to beat for its ergonomics and utility

Mine has a zdp-189 blade. I have used it hard for 2 years and have only had to touch up the edge a few times on crock sticks.

For a working knife its hard to beat

I've had a bunch of nice folders. The nicest one (ever) is a Jim Burke ROCKSTAR. It is more smooth in deployment than any folder I've had, which includes customs and several Hinderers. It is sized between the small and large Sebenza, which is just about perfect in my book. I sold mine in a fit of anxiety and stupidity, and would love to have it back again. I generally carry a large Sebbie or Zaan, but would be happy to trade for that ROCKSTAR. Great knife.

p.s.
My Jim Burke Rockstar is (was) a great folder in CPM154. 3.2" blade, two titanium slabs and a great slim feel, but solid-as-a-rock lockup and no blade wiggle or sticky lock or lock-rock.
Two titanium slabs of 0.130" each, excellent blade-steel of 0.130" thickness and 3.2" tip to handle. Handle width of 0.420" puts this folder as slimmer than just about any folder that I have, including PM2's, CRK's, Grayman DUA, TSF Beast. This is a superb knife; locks up SNAP. Solid as a rock.
Same specs as his custom folder...uses the same ribbed titanium backspacer as in his custom folder.

I looked at the various Brous offerings at SHOT show and got to talk to him for a bit; Brous seems like a pretty good guy and his stuff is definitely in the running

I was following this thread when it was first posted because I was very interested in how you carried one knife for so many years and what it would be replaced with. Any updates on what you chose as your new edc?
