Hey Folks.

Just thought this was funny.....I was looking for a Benchmade 810 Contego on ebay and I found this:

So I looked at it closely and the Seller has this marked as "New"....went ahead and looked at the Pictures and the Clip Obviously has wear which in my mind says its NOT NEW. I've owned a half a dozen of these Contegos, and dozens of Benchmades. I went ahead emailed him to ask whats going on with that...and this ensued.

Me:

"Hi.
Quick Question for you if you don't mind.
This Contego is listed as "New", but Why is there wear to the clip?

The Clip looks to have paint removed or scratches on it. Ive owned half a dozen Benchmade 810 Contego's and I've never purchased one New with wear to the clip.

Thanks in Advance!"

Him:

"Then don't buy it"

Honestly, Im super tired of people posting "New" on items, especially knives, and People getting burned because of it. What kinda bugs me is that this dude is in Texas like me. Just kinda bums me out.

So I've decided to continue asking him whats going on with this "New" Knife until he fesses up. Yes, Im bored at work. lol.

Yes I never buy knives on ebay. I buy from BF sponsored sites and even better, BF members.

You had to look at the clip?

The sharpening 'job' was an easier spot...

(Here's a picture since you had to remove the link)...

If you buy it and complain to ebay that is not as described he gets a world of hassle and has to refund and take it back.

Okay.
So I got another Email from the Seller:

Him:

"I had it ordered in and that was how it was. Minimal scratch on the clip. Not as bad as my every day carry of course. But that's how it came to me. Like in he description, I put an edge on it. That's the only "use" it has. "

I guess he saw the errors of his ways.
Happy it was taken down because that was bugging the hell out of me!

Super Stoked it came to a Good conclusion!

Probably not I reported multiple sellers for knockoff goods (that's all they sell) and they are still up and running.

I always wondered that too. I actually Called Ebay one time, and Talked to an Ebay representative, and told them that a knife was a Knockoff, and emailed them proof...they just didnt care. They told me there is no way they can prove it, so they have to let it ride.

Sucks.

I called him out on it too via a message on Ebay. He responded by calling me a "coward" (apparently because I called him out via a message on Ebay instead of "in person," as if that were even a possibility). I responded that I'd rather be a coward than a liar. A few minutes later the listing was taken down. Good stuff!

I have reported the same seller selling the same Chinese counterfeits (down to the logo's) several times and the only thing that happens is the seller relists the items. I have better things to do with my time. I only shop eBay for knives as a last resort.

It's not that they "don't care", it's that they found out taking down a listing because another eBay user claimed the item wa fake made it far too easy for unscrupulous sellers to shut down competitor's auctions. They will shut down listings of counterfeit goods, but only at the request of the party that owns the patent/copyright/trademark that is being violated.

As for the "new" issue, that's pretty subjective. Can't recall every buying a "new" car with 0 miles on the odometer and bought one years back that had a couple thousand miles on it. Have a neighbor with one he bought "new" that looks like it had been parked on a driving range from hail damage. Where knives are concerned, some folks just use "new" to mean "I never cut anything with it". Plus, eBay gives the seller two choices, new and used, some things don't really fit in either. Could the seller have scratched the clip? Sure. Could he have gotten it that way from a dealer who sold him a "floor model" as new? Sure. Could it have come that way from the factory? Sure.
