First off, I would like to say that the last two tactical folders that I have purchased are Spyderco's and I love them.

I am in the Army and have a Fixed Blade Knife idea, This Knife would be Full Tang with a 5-5.5 inch blade with an overall length of 10 -10.5 inches. It would have a Blade shape like that on the Military Folder. This knife would be like the Temperance Model but bigger and with more of the blade shape of the military model. I guess what I want is a fixed blade military with full tang construction with a 5 or 5.5 inch blade. Also if such a knife came with a multi position kydex sheath so you could carry it in different postions.

Just some thoughts, Sir,

Thank you for your time,
Rickj

We also have a Spyderco forum in the Makers & Manufacturers section. You can't move your thread, but a moderator can. I just reported your post to them, I'm sure they will move it for ya. :)

Put a 7" blade on it. Supposedly a 7" blade can reach all vital internal organs on most humans. :(

Well, again, I would guess that the Ed Schempp fixed blade will fit the bill. 10 in, S3V steel, last I heard, slightly recurved with median grind. Should be an awesome blade!

Hi Rickj. Thanx for the kind words. We always respect and appreciate our soldiers.

And thanx for thinking of us with your ideas.

As long as we're started, let's elaborate.

Why the selected blade length? What would be your ideal handle material?
Why full tang construction and should the tang be "full" or tapered?

What would be the specific functions you would be using this blade for?

The Temperance is 4mm thick, would that be the ideal thickness. You mentioned the Temperance and the Millie so I'm guessing that a full flat ground would be your ideal?

What about a sheath?

Mr. Glesser,

Yes , I am thinking of a full flat grind just like on the Millie, a tapered full tang would actually be better. The blade thickness should be the same as the Millie at it's thickest part.

The knife would be used for all around utility to include food prep and as a last line of defense. A full tapered tang would cut down on the weight but it would still be strong. S30V would be my first choice in steel but could live with VG-10. I would like the blade shape to be just like that on the Millie but with more width. Handle slabs could micarta or the same stuff that the Millie slabs are made of. Sheath, a good multi position kydex would work. Personnally I would like to carry such a knife horizontal on the lower part of my back, scout carry! Sorry the best way I can describe this knife is a fixed blade Military about 10 to 10.5 inches with a full tang but if it is tapered no problem. The blade should be wider as the depth or top to bottom than the Millie.

Thank You, Sir for responding to this thread! I hope such a knife may come to be in the future.

Sounds like the Spyderco fixed blade I have been waiting for except maybe just a slightly thicker blade.I don't mean Busse thick just somewhere inbetween.

Sal

I have liked most aspects of the various Spyderco FB's that I have and or have had, (Perrin, Moran, Temperance, and Vagabond). The only thing I did not care for was the scales made of FRN or FRN with rubber inserts, and the lack of full (or tapered) tang construction.

I have held the Ronin you have donated for us to use in passarounds and that is the type of construction that I'm talking about! The Ronin does not do it for me personally, but that type of construction is what does do it for me.

(Sincere thank you, again, by the way, for the many many knives you have provided for passarounds!)

Something like the Temperance, with a visible full tang, in a G10 or linen micarta in a good textrized finish would really make for something special.

Almost like a cross between your Ronin and your Temperance.

The G10 or brushed linen finish gives good purchase on the handles. The visible full tang, well, I just like that.

Great thread.

I think that's for a guy in full winter kit (from FS knife design). The solution is to offer a 5.5inch and 7inch blade (isn't that kabar size).
If you made it hidden tang like the fallkniven f1 you wouldn't have cold metal next to the skin and you'd still reduce the weight of the tang. Full flat VG10 steel would be a much better slicer then the outdoor knives I use but I wouldn't go any thicker then 4mm. (IMO any more then VG10 steel would add too much cost for armed forces knives). Have a bit of the tang sticking out the end of the handle for hitting things.
If you put a fairly large scondary bevel for the edge (at 20degrees) it would make it easier to control when making feather sticks etc If you had the first few inches of spine flat it would be easy to batton when needs be.

Sorry about the incorrect spelling on your name, Mr Glesser! and thanks to the forum member that pointed it out to me. Also G10 Scales would work on this knife. By the looks of some of the other responses, others would like a knife on the same lines as the one I have described. Again, Sorry! about the spelling thing.

Psst! don't tell anyone but I fixed Mr. Glesser's name on all my post.

Thanks for the hint!
