Calorie dense foods for winter backpacking?

quick question, because i thought they were the same thing -- what's the difference between lard & suet? pork fat vs beef fat? partof the animal it comes from?
In practical terms, lard is like grease and has a slightly unpleasant smell. Suet comes from around the kidneys of a beef animal and, at least in the prepared form in which it is usually offered for sale, is hard, waxy and neutral in taste and smell. It seems to keep forever which makes it useful for use in emergency rations. The neutral taste makes it excellent for sweet puddings.

Suet has to be rendered to tallow before it is shelf stable, otherwise it will spoil due to the non-lipid tissue present in it (bits of flesh, blood vessels, and connective membrane). Tallow is the waxy, (sort of) neutral tasting fat product that makes an excellent addition to backpacking meals. It is also a fantastic cooking fat for around the house.

I've mixed Peanut butter, Protein powder and honey before and formed it into bars. It would be very messy in Summer but as your talking cold weather they hold together pretty good !

Seen a show about two guys i think they went to north pole by foot. They had huge containers of butter that they eat it on thick dense bread or just like this.. That was there main food for energy. But they walked for miles pulling a sled and doing it in weather below freezing. How many calories does someone need for backpacking???

Loads!! After a few days you really start to lose weight no matter how much you eat :)

I am getting to feel my age in the background, so I try to avoid high sugar hits as I come down like a ton of rocks now.

Lots of oats based stuff, w/nuts and dried fruit (dates and so forth). Lots of sausage/biltong. I take stockcubes, noodles/pasta.

I also now take greens with me - just makes me feel better, and I am usually craving it by day two even. Broccoli is handy, and I am quite happy eating it raw. Store it on the outside of your pack if it is cold. If it is really cold, you can take frozen peas :)

Wild rocket and kale are coarse and take getting knocked about without bruising or turning into a black sludge in your ruck

I done plenty of 12-15 miles hikes. I tried diffrent foods to start the day before the hike. Here what i found works for me. I makes flavored oats add some dry milk and protein powder for body building and then add the hot water. Keeps me going all day. You can also make 5 min rice with extra water. When its almost done add dry milk, protein powder and suger. After its done and cool enough to eat add some nuts and dry fruits. It taste realy good, even kids like it and it would keep you going all day long.

Yes, that dried milk tip is a good one :)

MAin thing that keeps me going is tea. But that's a soul thing, more than a physiology thing

Noddy you and me both.... Love my tea Almost always start my day with a cup and im talking a mans sized cup about a Q sized..
