Ok every time I see a post on which Benchmade or Spyderco I should get the PM2 and the 940 come up . People alway say get 940 over the Pm2 or Pms is better because ////////. . I will bring a new view at Spyderco vs Benchmade the Caly 3.5 vs 940-1 or 940 . First of I'll say I been EDC both for two month now . And I like them both a LOT . I think these two knives are better comparison than a PM2 . Just because how they carry feel in the hand how long the blade are . Great knives .

I'm not a reviewer I'm doing this for fun and to let people know that the Caly 3.5 is a knife that can be compared to the 940 .

I like the caly ergos the knife fit and finish was spot on the blade came super sharp and the ZDP steel is great holds an edge very well it's still sharp . I just like the way the choil works on this knife I have a secure grip when I use it . The other thing is Spyderco manage to but a 3.5 blade on this knife maximize the handle from tip to tip . As you can see in the pictures the caly blade is not small at all . Sal did a great job with caly 3.5 there is a small up and down play on the knife expected from a liner lock . Carbon fiber looks good .

The 940-1 is IMHO benchmade best knife this knife is sweet looking with great blade steel . The revers tanto tip work great for stabbing and then cutting cardboard . The blade is a bit long for my need but for what ever reason I don't mind it on this knife . The edge retention has been good still sharp . But not as sharp as the caly . The 940-1 has the Best carbon fiber handle on a knife by far . They look sweet and feel like a200+ knife . Has minor side blade play .

Witch knife I like better . I like them both for different reason caly has a Slight edge just because of cost . You get a great knife with carbon fiber and ZDP for about $170 . Spyderco new knives are close to $200 plus know . The 940 is about $250 that said the knife is well worth the money . If you can't get the 940-1 the get the regular . Still a nice knife .

If you have them both I ask . Which one do you like better ?

I have a 940 incoming. In my knife-box is a new Caly 3.5 in ZDP. Both are good knives, but I'm a cut-and-dried Spydie fan from past experience, and love that ZDP... Recently, I gifted a Caly 3 in ZDP to each of my three grown nephews. They seem to be quite proud of them.

The 940 for me is just a sexier knife. I've never been turned on much by any Spyderco other than collabs like the ethnic series. I like the backspacer on the Caly 3.5, though. Spyderco makes consistently great performers--almost always solid, centered, and great slicers. I would never get the Caly because of the back-lock, though. Dealbreaker for me. I need to be able to open and close my knives one-handedly and safely

Hey congrats on your new knife, by the way!

Thanks, Utah. It's going to be a great day in my mailbox. I won a GAW from the nice folks at BladeMerchant, and a gorgeous 940 BK is coming my way. It will really be fun to check out this new BenchMade knife. The size and weight seem to be just an excellent package that should fit my hand-size perfectly. It's a happy day for sure.
This should make for a great opportunity for me to compare these two folders.

I'm a bigger fan of the Caly 3.5. Mind you, I've only had the regular 940 in S30V and the G10 Caly 3.5 in VG-10, but to me the Caly's blade geometry (the overall blade shape plus the thin grind) make it a much better slicer. And it's more comfortable as a result of the choil and the nicely jimped thumb ramp, as well as the handle shape. I also like the wire clip better.

Haven't handled a Caly 3.5, but I like my Caly 3 more than the 940. And I like the 940 a lot too. Definitely can't go wrong with either knife.

I've never found the 940 to be terribly comfortable and I don't find that it cuts terribly well due to its short primary grind. It's damn good in a lot of other ways, but those two things kind of kill my interest. I much prefer the Caly 3.5 as its ergonomics are much more suited to my hand and the FFG and broader blade make it a much better slicer.

I've completely skipped over the Caly line. I do, however, have a 940 and a PM2. I almost always grab the BM because it fits in my pocket way better than the PM2. I'll have to start paying closer attention.

You forgot the ZT 0450.

Nope. :p

Lol,you're comparing apples to oranges.:p

I have and like both knives, but give the nod to the 940-1.

The 940-1 is lighter by a half ounce(about 24%), and has a slightly longer cutting edge(by about 1/4"). I personally prefer the ergonomics of the Benchmade, I don't like the way the Caly needs to be held a certain way - that one bump towards the front bugs me to no end.

Don't own the 0450 and not getting one soon . I have way to many knives . I do think the 0450 is valid knife to add in this conversion Even dough the s35 steel is not in the same league .

What I meant was that I missed the Caly entirely - I barely ever heard anything about it before. I didn't realize it was a thinner overall knife than the PM2, which would be better for me. IE, it could replace my Paramilitary.

I really like the 940 series but I ended up selling mine thanks to the blade thickness and relatively wide blade grind. My Spydercos (PM2 included) and my mini Ritter were all significantly better slicers thanks to their high flat or full flat grinds. Much as I loved the ergonomics and form factor of the 940 (and the extra blade length when compared to the Ritter- those thumbstuds catch on everything), the blade just doesn't perform well enough for me to keep it. Now a Ritter style 940, or a FFG 940? That I'd be all over.

Yea the Caly 3.5 is not as popular as the PM2 and it doesn't get mentioned a lot when comparing knives . People over look the knife I know I did . I have the 3 and I'm not a big fan of the 3 I like the Delica better . I had the 3.5 in the box for almost a year then decided to use it and I like the knife a lot . Recommend this knife it's thin light and a great slicer . The blade does get scratched easy but not an issue me .

I want a 3.5 now, but I'm not that interested in the ZDP/CF version.

Spyderco knives are great but they have the wide blades. The Stretch has a fairly narrow blade. The ZT 0450 is fairly close to a 940 in weight and size. Nothing wrong with the Spyderco,I own several.

The frame lock on almost all ZT models is a deal-breaker for me. I almost pulled the trigger on an 0350, but I know I'd never carry it. Just too big and heavy for my liking.
