Caly 3.5 ZDP

I have a Caly 3 in ZDP and the sprint Caly 3.5 in super blue. I really feel that the 3.5, for me, is a better fit - I like that extra blade and handle length - it makes the Caly 3.5 look and feel alittle longer and leaner and I find it sets in the hand more comfortably. I do like the carbon fiber on the Caly 3 better than the "woven" style on the Sage 1 - as noted by prior posters, it looks and feels a bit more upmarket. The smaller size spydercos I own usually do not get assigned pocket time out on the jobsites or in the warehouse, so I find I do not need as grippy a handle. I cannot decide whether ZDP is the blade steel for me, however. I have a Stretch and an Endura along with the Caly 3 in ZDP and I have a heck of a time getting them where I want them as far as sharpness is concerned. I am sure that it has something to do with the technique I am using (sharpmaker used gently). That being said, the edge that I do get lasts a loooong time. All in all, this sounds and looks like a really nice package. I should know, but is this a sprint run? I keep trying to swear off participating in the sprint runs, but find it impossible - the production runs are a bit easier to budget.

Moki got the subcontract for these? That would explain a lot. Every Japan-made lockback Spydie I have really does it for me in some intangible way. The tolerances & feel are just "right" in some hard-to-describe way.

Totally agree with this. Did Moki do the Super Blue? I get this feeling with it.

I recall reading that Moki was making the laminated versions (Caly3).

The 3.5 is a superbly designed knife. After getting the super blue I've been hesitant to use it as an EDC so I popped for the VG10 last night. If they keep offering different variations I might be out a bunch of dough. :o

Will this be a sprint run or a regular production model? I want to buy 2 of them!! Any update on the ETA?

Regular production, that is the only reason I didn't pre order. If it were a sprint, I would have ordered 2 already. I have 2 of the Caly 3 ZDP and 3 of the Caly 3.5 Super Blue ;) I have 5 arms :P

It is a very nice-looking knife. I'll stick with the VG10 though for EDC. :D
+1
I do not like uneven laminated lines and do not care to much about polished CF. Still may be will buy one, and if this happen, it certainly will not replace my Caly3.5 in my pocket.

I really wish they were using either the same CF used on the models from Taiwan or the peel ply used on the CF Stretch.
+1
IMHO CF on Taiwanese knives is the best looking. Peel-Ply is OK, much better than polished.

Does anyone know if Moki makes the VG10 version of the Caly 3.5?

I really have no idea, but assume they do since they make the ZDP/CF Caly.
I would think both would be made in the same factory.

I agree. The engraving near the tang of the knife often shows who manufactures it. The "Japan" stamp represents Moki, I believe.

That sounds familiar to me as well. I will say that the G10 Dragonfly, Delica, Endura, and CF Stretch that came out of Seki City were among the finest I've seen from that maker. Really well made knives.
