is the pivot screw on a caly 3 cf supposed to be an Allen head screw type?. and did urs feel like there was sand in the pivot or was it silky smooth?.
and also are u supposed to expect some side to side blade play?

No it is torx pivot. Sounds like you need to flush out the knife and adjust the pivot.

ya i have had like at least 10 spydercos and a pivot has never felt this gritty.. they have always been super smooth!!

how do u go about giving a good cleaning to the pivot on a riveted knife?

Just hot soapy water works fine. Rinse and repeat.

While washing your knnife under the hot and soapy wanter, make sure you carefully open and close it repeatedly. This will free up any grit in the pivot.

No, It shouldn't have side to side, or feel very gritty. The steps given above should take care of it, but if not get in touch with Spyderco about the issue.
Hope a cleaning and pivot adjustment will work for you:thumbup:

I don't believe that is correct. My Caly 3 in VG10 has an allen head screw for the pivot. If you don't see the star points of a torx, then it's likely an allen head.

My Caly 3 in ZDP has an allen head pivot. It is not small either, so it is plain as day to tell the difference. Also, my Caly 3 is my smoothest knife, and has no blade play.

Well I could be wrong about the pivot. I got mine used and the screw is a little chewed up.

I would try washing it out before sending it in. Also don't be shocked to see opening marks near the pivot as this model doesn't use any washers.

oh that why it feel kinda different!

ya im gonna try to do it myself first
thanks all for the input!!

My G10 Caly is an allen pivot, gets chewed up really easily too. My Caly is however very smooth to open and close.

i contacted the seller and they are trying to fix the problem.. they think its a factory blemished knife.

Mine was gritty when I got it, and the pivot bolt was very loose. I think I got almost a full turn on the bolt when I adjusted it. It was purchased as being new, but I have the feeling someone messed with it a bit. I lubed it up a couple times and blew it out with some compressed air. It is super smooth now, and has no blade play in any direction. I was initially a bit disappointed with it, but after using and carrying it some, it is one of my favorite small folders. I even picked up a Caly 3.5 since I like the design so much.

ya its an awesome knife!!! its my new work knife. hopefully thats all i have to do to get rid of the blade play.

No such thing as a factory blemish Spyderco. If you have a small notch ground into the blade spine, above the Spyderhole on the right side, then it's a 2nd. Kershaw sells blems.

well maybe it was used and they were selling it as new... anyway we are working out a partial refund. the seller is trying to make it right so its all good with me.
