Caly 3 damascus??

Still concern about the pinned pivot?

I don't know yet. I've had Spydercos since the 1st gen Delica so I'm familiar with the pins. I've just gotten used to being able to adjust the pivot. I actually intend to use the knife but mostly for dressier occasions. I suspect it will be fine since the initial tightness is just about perfect.

Mine came today! It was marked as est. delivery yesterday, never came, and today my mail came without the package. So I called the post office and they found the package, apologized profusely, and dispatched a mail truck to bring it to me directly! Small town post office = awesome.

It's really a very beautiful piece, been playing with it for an hour now. Razor sharp out of the box, not quite hair popping (with no pressure) but it does shave hair. I'm not normally a fan of lockbacks because of the resistance to opening, hence why I previous bought a Sage 1 instead of a Caly 3, but the Caly 3 Damascus is much smoother than my Delica or Centofante 3, very easy to open.

I don't mind the pivot construction as it keeps the scales very clean and elegant. There is a tiny amount of side-to-side blade play if I really pull the blade around, but basically all knives have this (even Hinderers that I've handled)

My few gripes:

1) I wish they would have used ZDP-189 for the core and not VG-10. Not that this is going to be a heavy-use knife, but we know they can do ZDP-189 bonding so I'm not sure why they went with VG-10 here.

2) The back of the tang that rides the lock mechanism while opening is dark, not from rust but I guess from the acid bath? There is a very tiny bit of a gritty feeling while opening. Not like on a cheap knife, but a very almost unnoticeable amount. I'm sure this will improve with time. Still I would think covering up the tang portion of the blade during the acid bath to reveal the damascus would have been smarter to ensure a completely smooth mechanism.

While I like ZDP, I'm glad they didn't go with ZDP for this knife. I already have a ZDP caly 3, and it really isn't my favorite steel for edc. I love that I can just strop the VG10 back to hair popping in no time, and it will hold an edge really well. I'm still debating whether or not to make this a user.

I'm still wondering what kind of acid bath they used on this, as I want to blacken my caly 3.5 in VG-10 and haven't been able to figure it out yet. I'm guessing that they did some electrochemistry.

Well my thinking is they probably didn't want a steel that will patina easily (they are using some kind of stainless damascus plating after all) and with ZDP-189 you might see staining of the cutting edge.

I'm definitely making mine a user, but only a light user for office carry (not when I go camping, etc.).

I also want to reiterate just how gorgeous this knife is. I wasn't a fan of the Endura/Delica damascus versions because of the colors and bone handles which, to my eye, clashed with the modern design of the knives.

But the styling on the Caly 3 Damascus is just superb. Excellent balance of contrast, with a bright polished clip against dark CF scales, bright bolsters (though lightly satin and not buffed), and a blade that is a perfect blend of light/dark. The detail work on the blade also nicely goes with that on the CF, even though at different levels (the CF details are finer). Really a top aesthetic specimen.

I found the knife way above my expectations. I am Caly fan, but wasn't impressed when I saw proto pictures. In general I do not care about CF and not crazy about Damascus. I had it on pre-order, but start seriously think about getting one, when I saw more pictures and realized that the scales are not flat. I like it this way. So finally I got the knife and very impressed. I found Damascus more attractive than on Delicas. Rounded CF is very nice. The knife certainly goes on the very top of my list.

^^^ I believe it could work as a money clip. Any of my Spyders with the wire clip could.
I would still be careful though.
If you're planning on clipping your money to the knife and letting the knife sit loose in the pocket, it should be just fine.
