Caly 3 - G10 and VG10 (Japanese)
Sage - CF and CPM S30V (Taiwan with American Blade)
I can get these for about the same price. Sage is $6.25 Cheaper.

What are the tradeoffs?
Which would you chose for primarily Urban EDC?

The Caly uses a backlock; the Sage uses a liner lock.

The Caly has a metal backspacer; the Sage has no backspacer.

Both use a deep wire clip.

Blade length is the same (I think).

Blade shapes are a bit different.

I like them both, but the liner lock and lack of a backspacer are a huge turn-off to me. It doesn't mean that the Sage isn't as good; it just means that I, personally, don't like it as much.

I guess it depends on what your urban cutting tasks require and how the people in your area respond to knives. Both will be typical Spyderco quality as far as design, execution, and F&F.

The Caly 3 is a bit less conspicuous in use because it's somewhat smaller. It's also a little more comfortable pocket carry for me. I like G10 scales and I really like VG10 blades, especially flat ground ones. The Sage is a bit larger with a little more belly to the blade (even though it's about the same length as the Caly 3). The F&F on my Sage is flawless and the bubbled carbon fiber is my favorite version of that material. I also really like open construction knives, so the Sage comes in +1 in that category. S30V is a fine blade steel for a 3" folding knife, probably my favorite overall, and nobody does it better than Spyderco.

I have both and carry both. I guess if I were using it strictly as a general EDC and I just gave it occasional 'round town' use, I'd get the Sage because of it's upgraded looks with the CF scales and open construction. If there was a chance I'd need a "down and dirty" little beast that was far more capable than it looked, I get the Caly 3.

You can't go wrong with both......

IMO, Caly3 for EDC,
and pick up a Sage for admiring,
the bubbled carbon fiber is just perfect!

I have both plus a UKPK.
I like the Sage better, it's a little wider(handle and blade) so it is a little more stout. I also like the more "leaf like" blade shape. The Sage just feels better in my hand. Caly III is fine, but too narrow at the neck for me...........so
If you like narrow, go for it.:)

Sage blade cpm s30v

caly 3 blade vg-10

sage screw together construction

caly 3 rivit together construction can't take appart to clean.

I like both, but sage fits in the hand better with those with larger hands.
Some people don't like (made in taiwon),but the blade is made in the usa
and shipped to taiwon.fit and finish on the sage is superb just as the caly 3.
I would give s30v a edge over vg-10.Sharpening s30v isn't hard with a sharpmaker I just rebeveled a zt 301 with diamonds to ultrafine stones,just nasty sharp,and thats on a recurve blade.

I prefer the Sage, if we're just comparing these two models. Keep in mind that the Sage will also be released with other lock types if a linerlock isn't your thing. I'm waiting very anxiously for the ball-bearing lock Sage :D

I guess it depends on what your urban cutting tasks require...

I second this question. For me it really depends on what the cutting chores are in your EDC Urban environment. If you are cutting cardboard, tape, etc. I would go with the Sage because of my experience with CPM S30V. If you are cutting the occational string, piece of fruit, your fingernails, etc. I would go with the Caly 3.

When you make your choice, let us know. :)

Cheers.

I have the Caly3 in ZDP laminate and CF and it is a near perfect folding EDC knife.
I think it blows away the Sage but it is more expensive. A Sage with a ball lock would be awfully tempting at the same price though.
