Caly 3

I just picked one up a couple weeks ago - it's sitting beside me right now, actually. I had used the UKPK for a number of years and loved the way it felt in hand. This is basically a locking UKPK and I love it.

Congrats on the new knife, love the cf Caly's, both the 3 and 3.5. Truly works of art, and great edc's.

I've held a Caly 3 three times. It was amazing each time
The 3.5 felt weird to me though.
I'd really consider getting one if I didn't have a Sage 1

My first carbon fiber handle and first zdp knife, I mean i've got a leatherman skeleton cx but that doesnt count.

How do you like the texture of the CF? I love the twill CF on my Chaparral, but worry that the Caly 3 would be too slick for my taste. I do have an frn Caly 3 (UKPK ) that I carry all the time. Hoping for another g10 Caly 3/3.5 sprint.

The CF is pretty slick, but the jimping and ergos keep it firmly in hand with no worries. This knife used to ride IWB in my suit pants, and was great because it didn't rip the heck out of them.

I need to get a Caly 3. I will get a Caly 3.....its only a matter of time. Congrats on the new knife!

Can you tell me more about this? The Sage-1 in on my "buy next" list, however I've read some great things about the Caly 3 and 3.5 knives. Since I don't have either one as of yet, would you recommend one over the other? I was really interested in the Sage-1 since I like a liner lock, as well as because I already have a Chaparral.

Here's a quick and dirty side by side of the Caly 3 and Sage 1. I'm sorry for the crappy cell shots :)

The Caly 3 doesn't take as much room in the pocket as the Sage 1. It's a small difference, but the Sage's blade sticks further out from the scales when closed.

Overall the Caly is a bit smaller. The blade and handle are a touch shorter. The handle is also slimmer on the Caly 3.

With the closed back on the Caly, weight feels pretty much the same between the two. Same for thickness. They're pretty much the same.

Texture wise, I prefer the Sage 1 in hand. The CF is just grippy enough. As I mentioned in my other post, the smooth Caly 3 scales aren't that bad, as the jimping and ergos make up for the lack of texture. I can see the Caly 3 being friendlier to clothes, and comes out of the pocket easier as well.

Neither my Caly 3 or 3.5 really like flicking open. I use the full range of motion with the thumb to open them. The Sage 1 snaps open very easily with a light thumb flick. Sage 1 is easier to close one handed, but some people don't like putting their thumb in the blade path. Caly is doable one handed, but takes a little more thought. Even though they both have deep carry clips, I like that on the Sage, the back sticks up just a little more, giving you more purchase to extract from the pocket.

Choosing just one is too hard... Get both :) But if it was only one... I'd have to go for the Caly 3.

I hope that helps a little.

I really need to get a Caly 3. My 3.5 is my favorite EDC but sometimes I work in cities with 3 inch blade limits.

I do often wonder why Spyderco stopped making them in VG10.

I had both the CF and VG10..

The VG10 is stayed.. The ZDP is a PIA to sharpen..

The longer I am in this knife hobby.. The more I realize.. Super steels are overrated!
