Just picked up one of these in G-10/VG-10. I considered getting the dressed up version in carbon fiber and laminated ZDP but decided against it.
Wow, this is an impressive knife and my new favorite folder. :)
I recently got the G-10 flat ground Endura and the Stretch ZDP carbon fiber. I like the Caly better than them both.
The Caly has the thinnest edge of the three. The ergos are great. I prefer the wire clip. For the street price or the deals available at the auction site, this is a must own Spyderco.

It's a super well regarded knife and one of Spyderco's best, I think. I have a CF Caly 3 and a Stretch CF. I have a hard time deciding which one to carry so I trade off. I also bought a CF Caly 3 for my GF as well and she adores that knife.

I also have to put in a plug for the current Sage too. It's an awesome EDC and a great value to boot.

Props for the Caly for sure!

I like the Caly 3 and the Sage, the Caly 3 gets the nod for work carry (business dress) since it's a bit smaller and sits lower in the pocket. A couple comparison pics:

I want a Sage too but I'll try to hold out for the frame lock version, which I believe is next in line.

The Sage FOR ME is MUCH more frendly than the CalyIII. I'm not so fund of the "skinny" neck on the III. Sage feels much better. Plus the texture of the CF on the Sage is like no other CF knife I have, not slick, not peelcoat.
Note: the peelcoat ones feel fine, but it's harder to see the beautiful CF pattern.:D

I love my Caly 3. What does the simble on the side mean, I have looked all over for the meaning never could find it. I never heard about the frame lock sage Im going to have to have that.

It says SAL. The name of the designer and owner of Spyderco.

Very clever. Man I hate that I can't spell.
Come on Frame lock.
Thanks for the info, and not pointing out my poor grammar.

It looks to me like the Caly will be crooked in the pocked when clipped. Is this true?

Kind of. Either the clip is straight and the knife is crooked, or vice versa. I have never really noticed that so it must not matter to me, and my CF CalyIII has been 90% of my EDC for 5+/- months.

It's a little crooked but it's so small and light that it doesn't matter.

Been said before, bears repeating. Spyderco makes a lot of excellent knives. Both versions of the Caly 3 are among them, as are the Stretch II and G-10 Endura. The only question is which of them will be best for a given individual. No universally "right" or "wrong" choice between them, just what suits you best. Glad you picked one that works well for you.

Nothing better than a Caly 3...

Oh wait, just add Torx construction and we have the ULTIMATE EDC knife.

I wish I could rewind time to the day I got my Caly 3 and relive the experience!
:D

hello all...

i just picked up a caly 3. great knife!

i was just wondering if anyone knows at what angle i should sharpen this knife at. it looks like a 20* edge, but i am just looking at it. :)

All of the VG10 Caly 3s I've had have sharpened well at 15 dps. In fact, they've all come from Spyderco very close to that angle. I haven't had to do any serious rebeveling on any of them.

There is a great review of a Caly 3 after 1 year of hard use over on the Spyderco company forum. It just went up overnight. IIRC, he is using 12 degree primary bevels with 15 degree microbevels on his Caly 3 and he used it to remodel a house.

+1 on the excellence of the Caly3!

The consistency of that excellence throughout the entire model range, whether you have the VG10/G10 version or the ZDP189/CF version says a lot about the amount of time that goes into the design! It's a great knife either way you get it, and in any way you look at it.

I've got a CF Caly coming. Thanks for this thread, the info here helped me decide:thumbup:
