Based on Sal's comments on the USPK thread over on Spyderco Forum, I decided to break out the sprint discussion into a new thread. I am posting this poll here to gage interest in potential steel choices for a Caly Jr. sprint. Please vote and share your thoughts.

Joined here too. Thanks for open thread!
White Steel first, then Blue, but also HAP40 wouldn't be bad at all.
I would like that these steels could worked without external lamination, but I'm not sure about it

The maker that does the Calypso series used laminated ZDP-189, so I suspect they would want to use laminate on the carbon or tool steels as well. I could be wrong, though.

I like the Calypso Jr. to well to be picky about the steel.

Moki used solid super blue on the Calys.

They used laminated ZDP and laminated HAP40 on them though.

Yes please, Superblue steel, and that Superblue scale color with the fish scale FRN! Or a darker blue color..

I did a quick search, and it looks like there's never been a Damascus version. So my vote was for that and ZDP-189.

While I'm here... how about a bolstered c.f. Damascus version similar to the caly 3 sprint?

I'd buy.

super blue or hap40 would be my choice

OK Landon I voted also on this Forum for your Caly jr that you so desperately want to see return. Although I deviated a bit from my vote over at the other forum because I've not yet ever used any blade with that "Cobalt Special" blade steel and would love to try it out on something like the Caly Jr or even the C-54 big Caly for that matter. I love the entire Calypso line up from top to bottom and consider they to be among the best of Spyderco's IN HOUSE designs.

I believe that the TEMPERANCE 1 model should be considered as one of the Calypso line up and would also love to see it return in a Sprint Run with an exotic blade steel as well.

You know when you think about it the Caly Jr. is probably the best overall small blade to introduce new blade steels with just like the C-36 Military is the best blade of it's size range to do Sprint Runs of premium blade steels with. Great thread Landon and let's hope we can get this done. But dude I want to see it in PE & SE both.

I really don’t care. Make it AUS-8 again. I will buy it.

AMEN!

Actually, it's not quite right (for me) to say i don't care. More precise to say it need not be a fancy steel to make me happy. Vg10 is peachy, it's an excellent steel, imnsho. AUS-8, wth, i'm still interested. I'd actually prefer vg10 and frn with the fishscale pattern to keep the costs down so i can afford more than 1.

Yes, i'm one of those greedy bums when i really like the knife. But wth, if they all sell out asap, just change one variable & make another sprint run!

In fact, i "vote" for at lease 2 runs right out of the gate...the "bang for your buck" described above, and another to appease the steel snobs. In "fancy" steel, i like hap40. Superblue is nice, but a little too high maintenance in a folder, for my taste.

Hey that wouldn't bother me at all. Because two of my most favorite of all the Calypso Junior models was the two stainless handled ones I had >> one was plain edged and one was Spyderedged and they were AUS-8. Also that very special Micarta handled Caly Jr. was also AUS-8. There were a lot of models in AUS-8 that I have fond memories of.

My AUS-8 Catcherman is still in my user arsenal and I use it at least two to three times a week on average. I would love to find another full Spyderedged AUS-8 Catcherman. The AUS-8 era was truly a special era.

I think steel choice could be an important influencer on this one for people on the fence. It might make a big difference in sales, especially if they need to commission a full 1,200 piece run.

Super Blue is the big leader in both polls, and I'm totally down, but something that hasn't been used before by Spyderco might also draw people in. As much as I like carbon steels, I hear the folks who would prefer stainless or semi-stainless in a small folder. HAP40 is popular, but there have been several recent sprints in it already. I floated SG2 in the other thread as one such stainless option, I seem to recall people asking for it in the past. I'm also curious about SLD Magic (~8% Chromium), but admittedly part of that is just wanting to be able to say I have a knife with a "Magic" blade... :p

JD, I would be more than happy to loan you my Mule in Cobalt Special for you to get to test drive the steel. Mine gets moat all of its use in the kitchen or for camp food prep. Just say the word friend.

I vote superblue because I missed out on the others and I love it in my kitchen knife.

I also voted damascus if it's the bolstered carbon style like on the caly that I missed out on.
