Caly or Delica??

I am in the same position, do I want screw construction or a choil? Hmmm, I would probably go with the g10 Delica at the moment because I can't believe Spyderco would discontinue the Caly 3 without a better replacement.

But, if I didn't care about right hand only or not having a choil, I'd get the G10 Rookie.

To further confuse the issue, I believe FFG Delica/ Enduras are on the way next year (Thanks, Sal). That'll make screw construction & a finger choil the big issues between them. Choosing between those two exellent knives is really a nice problem to have. 2 real winners there. Handle both if possible.

I've been debating this too. I've got the FRN Delica4 but just bought the G10 Dragonfly recently and love the fit and finish, feel, etc. I was looking at the G10 Delica4, and the new flat ground Delica4, but really like the finger choil on the D'fly and Caly3.
I've decided on the G10 Caly3 since it is being discontinued, but was for a brief time also considering the CF/ZDP 189 option.

I was looking at the ZDP-189 Caly3 because I like the look of the CF scales, but after chatting with a member on the Spyderco Forums who has one, he mentioned the CF is not as grippy/textured as the G10, so I'm probably going to order the G10 version in the morning. I really like the G10 anyways. It feels great on my Dragonfly.

I have a FRN gray calypso jr and a delica 4. I like bouth much but if I had to loose one it would be the delica. The caly Is my favorit by far, its the flat grind thad does it for me. A flat grind delica with G10 or even better micarta handle and VG10 steel would realy rock my world. They bouth feels good in my hands but the Delika handleshape covers more of the point when folded and that is a great thing as the knife gets worend. Also it has a destinkt kick that can be filed to let the blade move deeper into the handle. Great things after many years of hard work when the blade has lost its original position of the tip when folded together.

I prefer the Caly because of ergos, but if money is an issue, I'd stick with the Delica. Personally I like the Delica Wave over the regular Delica.

I have the waved Delica and the CF ZDP189 Caly. I love the Caly but its too nice to carry around for edc, its also heavier than the D4. I dont actually carry the D4 much because i find the wave tears up my pants. I have been edc'ing my BM 940s but its got so much side to side play (even after adjusting the pivot and using loctite) that i'm really disappointed and dont want to carry it anymore. My solution was to get the G10 Dragonfly and another D4 without the wave :)
I can see myself carrying the Dragonfly at work and the D4 on weekends.

I ordered the G10 Caly3 this morning and am having it delivered to my office tomorrow (if FedEx doesn't mess up) so this time tomorrow I should be a happy camper.
Similar to barsoomian the G10 Dragonfly is my main EDC and the Caly3 will likely be in in-bag/back-up/weekend EDC.

I've EDC'd both the ZDP Caly 3 and the Delica Wave and also the Endura Wave. I didn't find the ZDP Caly 3 to be so heavy that I wouldn't carry it. I don't consider it heavy at all, but I know people's preference on that can vary. With regard to waved knives, you don't have to wave them open every single time you pull them out. I rarely use the wave and it's not difficult at all to pull it out of the pocket without waving it open.

I think you made a good decision. I just picked up a CF ZDP-189 Caly3 myself a couple weeks ago, and yes the CF is really polished quite smooth, although it has excellent jimping that helps it feel great in the hand. I imagine the G10 version would give a little more grip, hopefully without putting extra wear on your pants pockets :) . I really love the deep-carry wire clip, I carry mine tucked in waistband with the clip under my belt, helps hide it pretty well from the sheeple at my work.

Hey rodloos, thanks for reaffirming my decision on the G10 version. This and the Dragonfly are my first G10 folders. Most of my other folders are Zytel or FRN scales (except my SAKs) and I felt like stepping up the quality of the folders I get. I'll likely also get the G10 Delica4 some time down the road.

I am also looking at a CF Native 4 be because I may be aquiring one in a trade. What do you thing is it worth it or should. I stick to the G10 Caly?

Hey cutlery, I've never owned a Native or any CF scaled knives so can't comment directly on that but I got my G10 Caly3 today and it's one awesome knife. I don't know how or why it took me so long to get one of these. I've always been content with the Delica as my biggest folder and for some reason I always thought the Caly3 was a bigger knife than it is and used to find the overall shape kind of weird. I also thought that the end of the blade where it pivots seemed narrow and therefore weaker than the Delica.

All I can say is I was wrong. The handle is a touch shorter than the Delica4, the low-rise wire clip means it tucks in your pocket even better (IMO) than the D4, and most important to me, it just fits the hand so much better. The jimped choil is a real bonus IMO and I finally realized that after getting the G10 Dragonfly. These two knifes allow for precision cutting.

Going back to the CF though, all I can say is that from what I've been told it's a smoother finish than the G10 so grip may not be as secure. This is the reason I don't bother with SS handles anymore either. Once your hands and knife handle get wet there's an increased chance of slippage and injury.

Hope that helps!

Thanks, that helps a lot. I know I'll end up getting both the Caly and D4. The Native was never really on my list, it just sort of happened. The last (hopefully) step is to find a good place to get to get my g10 Caly.

Glad i could help bud. My first Spyderco ever is a 1st gen Delica with full SpyderEdge that I got back around the mid-90s after seeing a Spyderco (Police?) in the Stallone flick Cliffhanger.
The next closest to the Delica that I purchased was the Salt, which has the handle shape of the D2 or D3 (can't remember which). When I got the D4 with the redesigned handle I really was impressed.
Now that I've had a taste of G10 with the D'fly and Caly, I'm pretty sure I'll end up getting the G10 Delica4 too. The G10 with SS liners puts these into a new category over the FRN.
That's one of the reasons I've never bought a Native. I personally find some of the FRN handle designs look cheap, regardless of how much I like the overall shape of the knife. Same issue I have with the fishscale style FRN handles of older Calys. It's probably just me but I find they just cheapen the look of what is otherwise a great design. Just my 2 cents!
