Never have I opened a production knife out of its box and have it be this sharp---this thing (I got the PE) is SCARY sharp; easily shaved hair and sliced through the thinnest, cheapest magazine paper I could find without any trouble at all. It's a great blade, really like the flat grind and leaf point. The back lock is very strong, really smooth opening. I'm still not used to the handle...the ergonomics are a little shaky for me and it's a little small, probably due to the fact that I'm not the smallest person around...I play tackle on the o-line for the football team, if that gives you a relative size. The verdict is still out on the whole format but overall this is a really great design---really like the wire clip. Great job Sal, great job Spyderco. Thanks for keeping the knife community straight and great folders (and fixed blades, sharpeners, and everything else you do :D) in their hands. God bless you and America.

I received my Caly 3 several weeks ago. I haven't EDC'd it yet. But I am very impressed with the build of this knife as it has some heft to it compared to it's size. It will be a great EDC around the workplace and the house. I'm waiting for the ZDP189 Caly 3 now.

Im kinda mulling over a caly3 too to be my first, and hopefully only spydie knife. I have a question.. Whats a ZDP caly and how is it different from other caly3's. Thanks in advance.

The "ZDP" Caly 3 will feature a blade made from ZDP-189/420J2 laminated steel, and carbon fibre handle scales.

Congrats on the score steelscout30. My concern was that it would be too small for my liking as well. I'm more of a Endura, Large Manix, Military kind of guy. It looks like a great design.

jig,

Also for ZDP-189, it's relatively moreexpensive due to it's supposedly better performance over more common steels that are being used. Particularly it's significantly harder than other steels. Personally, ZDP sounds great to me, but I think the average knife buyer shouldn't be concerned about paying a premium for something that he won't really notice because of his noobieness. If you were to consider the Carbon Fiber/ZDP Caly 3, understand that you'd be doing it for aesthetics and possibly bragging rights (if that's your thing, it sure as hell is mine :D).

Most people on these forums have a lot of experience with knives and why they like what they like, so spending an amount that's relatively significant to their bank account isn't as much of a concern. Being a noob to this, I suggest you look around and play with slightly cheaper knives ("cheap" being relative to your budget) in different styles to see what you really like. A lot of guys on these forums can answer the following questions:

Which do you prefer:
Thumbstud, Spyderhole, flipper, other?
Steel preference?
Blade and overall knife length?
Handle material?
Blade shape?
Waved?
Specific Companies/ Custom makers?

The list can go on and on.
