Caly3 with gunk on the handle

I think the knife or handle should be replaced. No, it is not a big problem. No, it probably doesn't affect functionality. But it certainly does affect the customer's satisfaction (and btw, if I was him, I would be just as unhappy. I would not want carry something covered with sticky who knows what (and for those thinking isopropyl alcohol would work - do you think Spyderco didn't tried this? It probably isn't as easy to get rid off.)

The fact is that $100 knife should not come in less than perfect condition, period. If some people here are happy if it doesn't, fine for them. But keep your smartass comments and aggressive tone for yourself :thumbdn:

IMHO, not solving even minor issues (that would be too bad if there was a significant portion of major issues!) is bad for Spyderco, as it will probably lose a customer.

If seller states that it was not used or resold as a (used) return, the customer didn't do that to his knife and it didn't come like that from Spyderco then WHERE/WHOM came the problem from?

Most people here offered simple, easy things to try, WHICH WOULD NOT RUIN THE KNIFE OR SCALES, and the OP ignored them all, and then went on a mini rant aimed at Sal.
The responses to the OP have, by and large, been VERY restrained, I'd say.

Hardly! Go back and read it again. And I do thank you for your input.

huugh feels the same way as I, and I think many others do to, its just that if anything that is not positive or some kind of praise, is said about Spyderco, they are in the wrong. Last I checked, we are free to say what we want, when we want.

Fair enough; I just try the fixes I can do at home first, as long as they don't void the warranty(and sometimes even then:eek:).
I've had a few knives from various companies with minor issues(yes, even with Spyderco, although they were minor issues), and I was always able to make things satisfactory to me.
With a Buck I had to tweak the liner lock; works perfect now, and I didn't have to wait for endless mail times-and I was able to get rid of the stupid sharp corners to the liners.
My Spyderco Chinook 3 had a slight gap between the liner and the scale, but a disassemble and a bend later, and it's pefect too; made the action nice and smooth while I was at it.:)
If it was a $400 knife we were talking about, then YES, I'D be pissed if it wasn't 100% perfect in every way too.
I DO recall some weird gunk on ONE of my knives, but it wasn't a Spyderco; I forget which manufacturer it was though. And I WAS annoyed with it, till I discovered how well 99% pure isopropyl worked for cleaning stuff off.

I think the tossing around of prices is not a great way to look at it. $100 or $400 for a knife may not be much to one person, but it may be an extraordinary expense for another. Saying it should be perfect at one price or another is not the same as just plain expecting a certain level of quality from factory fresh blades. It's not how much the item costs, but whether or not you're expected to accept certain flaws in it. Nothing is perfect, but how far from perfect can it be before you have the right to complain. If no one else has a Spydie with the stuff on the pivot, then is it acceptable for this knife to have it?

What I don't get is why CS didn't just clean it. If it takes no more than a wipe down with goof off or something similar, why send it back uncleaned?

You DO expect different things at different price points; otherwise, all things would cost the same.:)
It IS a bit weird that the gunk wasn't wiped off though by CS, I'll admit. Seems that would have been quick.

joe, you don`t like what I`m saying, don`t read anymore. You always seem to defend Spyderco by wanting to instigate arguments. I will not stoop to your level, nor respond to any more of your asinine remarks.

I agree. It's probably best if we just ignored each other. Your asinine remarks annoy me just as much.. Joe
