Is the coming zdp caly3 a sprint run or regular production?
And what about the stretchII ?

Will the stretch II have a solid zdp blade?

Hi Neo,

Both are planned for regular production, but both are expensive so we'll see how sales go before we make any long term commitments.

Both are well made very high performers. The Caly3 uses a laminated ZDP blade and the Stretch2 uses a solid ZDP blade.

Mr. Glesser,
Why did you decide on the laminated blade for the Caly 3 instead of the solid ZDP blade? No complaints, just wondering!

Thank you Sal for the clarification

I think it has to do with the capability of the manufacturer to deal with the thickness of ZDP stock (laser).
Some have to laminate the ZDP others can handle solid ZDP blades

Imho lamination with a softer steel makes the blade stronger and maybe more corrosion resistant.
Some prefer the looks of the lamination line, others don't.
The softer steel at the sides could easier be scratched than a solid ZDP

On a side note what steel is used for the lamination? 420HC?

Sal, I seem to have heared the lead time for zdp is almost a year.
If this run is sold out, when will the next be made?
How many are now made?

thank you.

Hi MJR,

Neo's clarification is accurate. Some makers have different equipment.

Hi Neo,

We've got some standing orders now for steel, but it's still not as reliable as we'd like.

Sal,

Are you guys planning of using ZDP in other knives besides the ones already mentioned? What I mean is, either Sprint runs or new Production items slated more towards next year or so? Like a Paramilitary II with ZDP or something like that.

Right now we've got the Lum Chinese Folder and the Stretch2 in the works. Others are being considered.

Sal, whats the reason behind some ZDP blades being laminated and some not? Have you guys found that ZDP is more brittle than other stainless steels like VG-10 and S30V? If thats the case then I guess the only reason larger ZDP blades like the stretch II and endura are not laminated is to keep cost down.

My experiences with ZDP-189 show it to be stronger when ground real thin, but neither steel is particularly tough.
