Calypso 3 Carbon Fiber / ZDP189: Perfect

I'm sure there are. Ex, my straightrazor is knife like and its 0.006" thick at 0.170" from the edge. I could sharpen it at 90deg and it would still "cut" cardboard. It would certainly break cutting through plastics though. My point (i think) was a question as to the use of a folding knife with an extreme low profile geometry.

edit: cliff, what knife were you referring to?

There actually are knives like that by the way, <0.005", angles of 10-20 degrees.
Yes, just look at the very thin blades that used to be common on some of the popular slipjoints our fathers and grandfathers carried (and maybe they still are ...???)

Really good edge geometry isn't necessarily hard to achieve or expensive -- for $10 you can buy a 12C27 EKA Compact from ragweedforge ... after sharpening down to 10 deg/side the shoulder is still only .007"-.008".

However IMO if a really acute geometry is desired, a wide-blade design like the Caly-series isn't the best starting point. For such a blade .012"-.013" seems very reasonable.

Boye's folders have similar grinds. The problems with current steels is a combination of too much carbide and too soft a hardening leading to horrible edge configurations where the geometry is similar as to would be found on a chopping bowie. That is just nonsense.

Sputnick,

I agree with measuring edge width as well, I haven't found a good way to do it. I tried with an older straight razor and my calipers, and put a sizeable ding in the edge accidentally...

I agree with Cliff, having an ultra-hard knife is the way to go for this configuration. A fellow rec.knives member sent me a couple of homemade knives in M2 at 65, and they are just unreal.

Having said all that, the Caly 3 edge configuration is still the best I've seen yet in a production knife, folder or fixed.
