Calypso Jr in ZDP-189...worth it?

My second Calypso, Jr. ZDP from IslandTactical arrived today as well!! I am so glad I was able to get a second!! It is staying in it's nice little box. The Caly, Jr. is an AMAZING knife!! I have had mine on me everyday since it has arrived. I can not leave the house without it. I am so happy that others are able to get a second chance at this amazing little knife!!

I now have two, just received my second Caly and looking foward to really putting them through some use. I definatly recommend them, especially since you would probally be able to resale it fairly easy if you didn't like it.

The ZDP Caly, Jr. rules!!

Does it? I'm still pretty much undecided on that. I've also got two of them, and while I agree they're nice knives, especially with their high hardness (for a stainless steel) and their thin edge profile, I'm not yet sure whether they'll stand the test of time.

For a start, I had some pretty obvious chipping in one of my knives after only a couple of weeks of very moderate use, a problem I *never* had with my Caly in VG-10. I can only hope toughness doesn't turn out to be the weak spot of this steel, but I'm not sure. I'm also not yet sure about their rust resistance. I know what VG-10 is like in difficult conditions, but not what ZDP-189 is like. Time will tell.

Like I said, the Caly Jr. in VG-10 is a better knife. ZDP-189 laminate is just a load of hype.

If you like hype, then by all means pay extra for the hype.

BladeForums has been a real big help for myself in learning all about everything :knives.

But I will suggest something that is absent here. And that is not true at other sites that specialize in hobby "hard objects" (for lack of a better word).

Most gun sites are jammed packed with enthusiasts (gun nuts) who like you guys not only talk (all day and night) about their love for their " favorite hard object"....guns: but they also at the same time post a gazillion photos of them!

Photos help everybody!

Some gun photos are even called gun "porn"! That's because gun people love to SEE guns. Knives can also be "porn".....in the nicest way!

BF as far as I can tell is filled with folks who love blades....but are not into actually seeing photos of those blades. You've already seen them!

It's sorta a secret club you got goin' on here.

My point?

"Blade guys" know just what a ZDP Caly is, but you gotta realize people that if you want to liven' up your site and maybe even get new folk into blades.....like gun sites, and a lot of other sites (even chain saw sites) do

...........show us some "pictures"!

Maybe the answer to that is......"How do I do that"?

I don't know!

I'm just a Nobody Newbie who doesn't know a Caly from a Woodie.

I think the Calypso, Jr. IS worth every penny!! Although, I did NOT spend $100 on either of my Caly, Jr.'s

When they came out you could get 'em for $65. Definitely worth the differece to me though I love the Caly Jr in VG10 also.

I really didn't mean it that way and I regret the analogy.

However I'd love to see some big glossy pics of knives. It may be that posting photos is a pain. But they'd be much appreciated. They would help someone who doesn't know the language of knives.

I have learned a great deal from this site.

Mostly I am totally surprised to know that so many people actually use knives as much as they do. For you guys it's natural thing, just like it is for gun nuts to use firearms.

I personally believe that my avoidance for carryiny a knife, prior to needing one for self defense on my job, is the whole process of needing to sharpen it.

My childhood memory of knives, (as I'll bet is the case for 95% of all people) is this:

Knives get dull! They get dull faster than ice cream melts: or so most people have experienced. And 95% of all people don't know the first thing about how to keep a knife sharp.

Most people think (and I still do) that once you cut something with a knife, you have just started a very quick downhill process to having a butter knife in your hand.

Which brings us back to that little "sharpening thing".

And that is why most people leave knives back when they were kids. (Except to eat with).

I am about to buy a fixed blade knife and will be spending around $400.00 for this thing. I will NOT be cutting anything with this knife.

Because I haven't yet learned how to sharpen it. And I am not buying a $400.00 knife to use to open Christmas presents.

I have it in my head (as I believe that 95% of all people do) that if you use a knife even once.....you have dulled that knife. And now you need to bring it back to where it was when it was new! And that is an art that is beyond me.

Whatever! I love BF and I want to keep learning new stuff.

If you are ever able to post a pic of your knives.......go for it!
