Hi, Sal.

A while back there was a thread on a new Calypso Jr Lite in the works. If I recall, it was going to be flat grind VG10 blade, Zytel handle, tip down carry, and reversable pocket clip. Is this going to be a real production piece? If yes, do you have a rough guess on availability date?

The Calypso Jr. Micarta and Delica are both awesome, but I am a doomed lefty in search of a flat grind.

Best Regards, Todd

When a company already has such a rich variety of SKU's that it is trying to simplify its catalog, it would probably be easier to lobby for a variation that would use an existing handle assembly, rather than one that would require more R&D and tooling.

How about a flat-ground variation on the Delica? It's tip-up carry, but the ambidextrous clip is there already.

Flat ground Delica....

Ahh, sounds very good, and would be in keeping with their change to flat.

But isn't the Calypso their flat ground Delica??

One may want to keep an Eye out for my review of the Bob Kasper designed, Kevin Gentile modified AFCK and interview of Bob Kasper. Sorry about the wait, my review and interview should be online shortly, luckily Spark has graciously offered to do the pictures, look for it right here at BladeForums.com.

The C52 Lite is currently being tooled. Flat ground VG-10 blade. Tip down Left / Right clip. Directional texturing on handle. Should have proto sample at Blade Show in June. Scheduled for late '99 intro as a Y2K model. The Micarta version will more than likely be discontinued. Currently trying to decide about whether or not to discontinue the stainless version. Any opinions?

Sal,
My preference would be to keep the micarta Calypso Jr. and if you had to discontinue a version toss the stainless steel one. I'm just not as concerned keeping this kife in my pocket like I would with a stainless version due to marring of the finish.

I'll admit I'm biased since I have a micarta Calypso Jr. Great handle ergos!

To me it seems the stainless Calypso Jr is an easy model to toss.

Small and heavy never do me right, Big and light are perfect, well.. like my new Military for instance.

And compared to it's brother the micarta version..... GONE

And flat compared to hollow for peformance, GONE

So, the judges decision is....

It's outta here.

Of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Thanks for the feedback. It sure seems like the Calypso Jr Micarta is dear to MANY hearts, while we don't hear much comment on the stainless version. Without knowing your sales numbers and margins, I would opt for keeping the Micarta and discontinuing the stainless. Decision may be different with the financials.

I personally like the ergonimics of the Delica better, regarding the rounded top to the thumb ramp and no choke up coil in the blade. I presume the C52 will maintain these two characteristics from the existing Calypso line. Am I correct, or will the C52 differ from the existing Calypso Jr in these regards?

Best Regards, Todd

Sal - I vote to axe the steel C52. It seems that you guys have enough SKU's with steel handles already!

I don't like stanless steel handles much - too slippery unless you have some kind of grabber material on top. I'd say this would be a good one to axe. Thanks for asking.

Not if you had the scales checkered from an excellent source in CHECKERMARX@compuserve.com

See the recent thread on Checkering steel scales. A nice review was given on a checkered steel Native recently!

Count me with those who would rather keep the Micarta Calpyso Jr. at the expense of the steel handled version.

ToddO: I was bothered by the sharp hump on the Calypso Jr., so I dremeled it off, and I also rounded off the spine except for the part nearest the tip. Good move on my part, methinks. Aesthetics should never take priority over function, where knives are concerned.

I am still in awe of the Micarta Calpyso Jr.
Out with the Stainless Steel model. I like the chock up grip, it's something a bit different, and cool...

Micarta for me too.
Bought a couple when they were still experimentals. Super sharp out of the box. Great fit and finish. The flat grind looks better than the hollow grind, at last to me.

I agree with the above sentiment. The micarta Calypso Jr. is the best folder Spyderco ever designed, in my opinion. And its look -- the classiness given to it by the micarta -- is part of what makes it so great. Micarta isn't *just* lightweight, and zytel isn't a replacement for it, in my opinion. Zytel is a way to get a lightweight inexpensive knife when you don't care about the look and feel so much. Micarta is ALL look & feel! It would be a shame to discontinue it just because there's an inexpensive zytel version for the masses. I'd urge you to not only reconsider, Sal, but to consider simplifying your supply chain by using the same VG-10 blade on both the lightweight and micarta versions.

The steel version, on the other hand, is yet another steel-handled sabre-ground knife in Spyderco's lineup. That's the one I think should be axed.

Is this a nightmare?? Micarta Calypso Jr. possibly being discontinued?

No, I say! This is one of the best production knives, period. However, I do agree to simplify things, it would be better to switch to VG-10 on both the Zytel and Micarta versions. But KEEP THE MICARTA JR., please.

Drop the stainless handle.

JamesY -- Sal was just asking what handle material to drop from the Calypso Jr model, so don't worry

Sal,

What came first for the Calypso's? Grind, choil, something else?

I have heard that they are the next phase in the Endura/Delica line...

What is the story. Please

That Fat Flat ground blade opened, with the striking contrast of the Black micarta handle, is the best looking piece Spyderco offers, IMO. It would be a crime to lose it.
