I just ordered a plain edge Calypso Jr. LW from MJ&S last night. It *seems* like it should be an ideal PC daily carry knife for me. Who else owns one and what do you think of it? Marcus

As far as lightweight knives go, "it's da bomb"!
Once you get yer mits on it, you'll know what I mean.
It's a great knife for the money. No, it's NOT a great knife for the money, It's an outstanding knife for the money!

If it's stupid but works, then it isn't stupid!

If you want an inoffensive knife, the Calypso ltwt is a great choice. Unless you go around flicking it, no one will notice it. It is also sharp as heck and must only weigh an ounce or so. It is the lightest full size knife i own.

You have made an excellent choice! The Calypso Jr. Ltwt. is one of the best designed Spyderco knives I own. I immediately had to have one after handling. The handle fits like a glove and the VG-10 steel is rapidly becoming my favorite. This was and still is the sharpest knife I own.

Recently got one after hearing so much about them here in the forum. It was extremely sharp right out of the box as is typical of Spyderco knives. I prefer G10, but the handle material on this knife is better quality than what's used on my BM Panther. I took it to school yesterday and used it twice in front of people. This raised an eyebrow or two, but nothing serious. The Calypso Jr. is larger than the Dragonfly my colleagues are accustomed to seeing. I think they could get used to seeing it, but I'll probably continue to carry my Dragonfly on a daily basis at work. It's smaller and takes up less space in my pocket. When I get home and change clothes, the Calypso Jr. goes into my pocket for the rest of the day. For the price (I got mine from Mark

) it seems to be a great knife. I'm anxious to see how VG10 holds up.

Just an excellent knife. Been carrying one for a couple months now. Very, very sharp. Resharpening is not bad. Handle quality is great and the fish scale pattern provides good traction. And for me one of the most subtle but hugely convenient changes on the ltwt vs any of Spyderco's lockbacks, is the relief cut on the lockbar. The location you place you finger to depress he lockbar has been relieved. While at first glance seems minor but after using for a while this is such a nice addition. Can locate the lockbar by feel - just a simple but extremely convenient feature.

This is just an outstanding knife that happens to be not that expensive - you made a good choice.

Thanks for the reviews, now I really can`t wait `till it gets here! Ptn,funny you should mention the Panther, that`s what I carry at work. It *was* my PC knife but it tends to get kinda filthy and isn`t the greatest thing for clean street cloths or food! I`ve been carrying my CS Vaquero and a Micra but I really needed something in between. The Calypso Jr. LW sounds like just the thing!

If the VG10 really works out I may get another one and retire the Panther. The liner lock`s failed on me a couple times (ouch!) and the G2 steel doesn`t hold an edge that well. Marcus

Fantastis knife that has replaced my micarta Jr. Much better nonslip grip and lighter weight thicker handle.I like the new steel(super sharp and holds edge well). I do however, prefer the aesthetics of the micarta version better. The lightweight makes for a better work knife,. You should really have both if you can, and each variation. The only knife in this category that out performs it is my "old" micarta handled BOYE. I absolutely love that knife! Its edge retention is awesome and its action is super smooth! It just feels better in my hand than the Calypso. I often carry it clipped to my buttoned sport shirt on my chest when wearing gym shorts w/out pockets. I never know its present until needed.

I carried a PLAIN Calpyso JR LTWT every day from the time I could get my hands on it - I love it! It recently got uprooted by another knife

.......no, it is STILL a Calypso Jr. , but a standard one w/ AUS-8. The VG-10 holds an edge a LOT better, but the AUS-8 is so easy to tough up that it can become a scalpel in a couple of light swipes on a small ceramic stone.

Typically, the LTWT would be in my pocket, but THIS micarta one is 'special'.

I use it proudly!

BTW - thanks again (you know who....lol)!

I cut a small rectangular piece if black traction tape - the rubber kind, and place it over my clip. Granted it hides the cool little yellow critter, BUT it makes for a firmer grip. I have it on the flat part, and 3/4 thru the radius part of the clip. Tape wears out after a while, but I just cut another piece and stick it on. Give it a try - if you need some of this tape drop me an e-mail fellow Calpyso Jr lovers!

What a little gem of a knife! Fit and finish is very good, lockup is nice and tight and it`s SHARP,I mean SCARY SHARP! Very light, nice grippy scale pattern ,smooth action. This is the first Sypdie I`ve tried that I could "flick" with ease (holes generally don`t work well for me). I love it!

I just ordered a Calypso Jr Lightweight from MJS two days ago as a gift. I'm sure my friend will be very happy with it. I know I would be.

I've had my Calypso Jr. lightweight for a couple weeks. I haven't used it much. A thread here, an envelope there....and then this morning I put the first real pressure on the blade/handle pivot. I wanted to open a new 5gal. bucket of joint compound. I reached for the Calypso jr. to make the necessary cuts in the plastic pail's lid. As I pressed the blade into the plastic I felt some vertical play. I finished the cut and started another one, watching the blade/handle junction....sure enough, there it was. Vertical movement of the blade and the locking bar....plus a little "clicking" sound and feeling in my hand.

I like the knife but I do not believe this is normal and intend to send the knife to the customer service department. Has anyone else experienced this? Just wondering...

regards

ptn
