Got my first spyderco today, a caly jr, and wow. An awesome knife, sharpness out of the box the best i've seen from factory. For 35 dollars I couldn't imagine a better knife. I was going to get something else for my next big purchase, but I feel the hooks digging in, gotta get a manix......

I figured out Spyderco's marketing plan:

1) Consumer buys Caly Jr for $35, and is blown away by the quality of the product.
2) Consumer buys Manix, or other high-end Spyderco.
3) Consumer is addicted. Spyderholicism sinks its claws into their brain, never to let go....

..... but yeah man, the Caly Jr is one heck of a knife! Good taste!

It's funny, because I've bought Busses, customs, etc without even blinking at their sky high price tags, and this little japanese production knife is as or more functional than many of them, and sharper out of the box!

I bought a Calypso Jr. Ltwt. from SFO when they first came out a little over five years ago. The price (which I thought was a good deal at the time, though it was full retail) was $67. LOL!

It's crazy how the newer gray-handled Calypsos are so inexpensive now. That's definitely one of the best deals in the knife world.

The Calypso Jr. Lt wt is a slicing machine where a lot of knives a sharpened crowbars. The Calypso Jr. are what a knive should be sharp and thin.

The Calypso Jr is by far my favorite FRN knife from Spyderco. I have been guilty of using it around the kitchen most of the time. Congrats on your first Spyderco, and I'm sure it won't be your last.

Well, I just bought one on ebay. Hopefully I will have it soon. I have been wanting one for a while. They are getting hard to find though. Any of you guys know any dealers that may still have a few?

Let me know as I usually buy two of everything I like.

I gave in immediately to the addiction and got a Manix, trendy i know, but I had a large tough folder spot to fill and I want another spyderco.

Funny that I was just coming into this forum to comment on the Calypso Jr that I've had for so long and here's a thread right on the front page...

Anyways, like many others apparently, I love my Calpyso. Very easy to carry due to its light weight and slim profile. Great ergonomics and blade shape. HOWEVER, I do have a complaint. As much as I like VG10 (have an Al Mar S2K with it), it just doesn't seem to be cutting it for me (no pun intended). I use my knife every day to open mail, boxes, and plastic packages, along with cutting cardboard maybe twice a week. And the edge simply doesn't hold up. If I want to keep that impressive sharpness, I have to sharpen every week. Its just kind of embarassing when I encounter someone and I think to myself that I've love to show off this great knife, but I haven't sharpened it this past week! Please please consider a run in something tougher like S30V. My desire for a small knife with a more enduring edge is almost leading me towards the darkness that is Sebenza... ;)

Minjin,
Not sure if you've seen the threads on the ZDP-189 calypso Jr. The RC is going to be higher. Not sure how this translates to edge retention. May be the right update for you.

Thanks for pointing out to me the new upcoming version of the Cal Jr. I had no idea. Still have never heard of the steel, but you don't get much more hi-tech sounding than "ZDP-189"...

I'm fine with VG-10. It holds a fine edge for a very long time IMO (at least it does on my Endura, Delica, and native III).

But I do hope that the "new" Calypso Jr will not have that sharp cusp at the peak of the thumb-ramp.
It's just too sharp and prevents me from using my thumb to exert downward pressure on the blade.

I guess that's why I love the Native III so much!

Good luck,
Allen.

Man I tell ya.....

I just recently thought I would use my Calypso Jr to cut some sandwiches in the kitchen the other day. I just felt like it. :) That darn knife cut through my bologna and cheese sandwich like I have never seen before. It was like a laser cut my sandwich.

What a great knife. :)

Minjin,

My Calypso Jr. in VG10 is much easier to sharpen and holds an edge longer (by far) than my small Sebenza in S30V. The Sebbie of course is tighter and the machining is very good, but for the price differential, it should be.

Just something to consider.

How do you guys sharpen your CJ's anyways? I've been using the narrow angle, 30 deg I think it is, on the sharpmaker...

WoW! I got my CJ in the mail this morning. Like razor sharp right out of the box. Love this blade. My only disappointment is the pocketclip. I'm a tip up carry fan. Not that I haven't carried tip down before but just prefer the other way. Other than this I love the knife. Mine has the VG10 steel. Great great knife. I see why you guys love this thing. It is a fine knife for more delicate work. I'm supposed to get my Manix this afternoon though so it may be overshadowed and forgotten about here shortly.

I do the same, the 30 deg edge makes it an insane cutter. I like mine a lot (but won't be buying more spyderco's) ;p
