Was a beautiful and mild winter day here, so packed-up a new MULE for a half-day snowshoe. Picked it up for only $40 bucks for some milder weather fly-fishing and hiking trips, but wanted to see what it could carry at it's max. Just me and the woodpeckers out for some fresh air in this neck of the woods:

Not something I would recommend for winter use, given it's capacity, but I was on a known trail and only out for 3-4 hours. It fit my lunch, gloves, fleece hat, mini-first aid/survival kit, cell, gps, compass, mini-grip and lights and of course, a bladder full of water (weather not cold enough to freeze it). I could barely fit my white box stove and Vargo Ti cup, and some alcohol - but it made it in. However, it just didn't feel like my Maxi Vulture when it's full of survival and comfort goodies - at the expense of weight, of course.

I would recommend for light 3-season use on known terrain where risk is mitigated. Nice, comfortable way to pack light and ensure easy hydration. Like I said - probably going to be relegated to carrying my fly-fishing gear when on th river. Cheers :)

Just a note that I picked these winter fleece/windcutter open finger gloves with zippered mitten cover at Eddie Bauer for $9 bucks (down from $24) - the windcutter worked very well and the palm is rubberized for grip. These will be on the archery hunt with me next year - good time of year to load-up on winter gear. :)

Also got some new leather pants for my Crewman:

and, as a follow-up review for the white box alky stove - just one thing to say - makes good hot chocolate on a winter's day:

I agree -- the M.U.L.E. is a good pack. I've got one I bought in '97 for US $65, and it's served me well for mountain biking. I really like the color of yours -- might have to look into a replacement for my old, beat up, torn one. As for size -- I don't carry it for hiking. It holds enough for a ride -- 100 oz. of water, several power bars, keys, cell phone, light, RAT7, Glock, etc..... but doesn't have enough room for extra clothes.

For hiking, I carry a Trans-Alp. Lots of room, and fairly comfortable.

Nice pictures, by the way! Sure is nice to have the sun out a bit again.

I reallly like my MULE but I use mine for a biking pack. I have a Hellion for winter hiking. I use a variety of Oakley and Maxpedition products for summer use.

Nice pics. I like the Mule, it's a nice size for short hikes and woods walking. For longer hikes, I would want more storage for the extra necessities of the unknown.

brians,

I like your stove setup. I too, have the Vargo Ti cup and the Whitebox stove and they work great together. I also like the leather sheath that you got for your Becker Crewman. I would really be intersted in gettiing a similar one for my Becker Companion.
Could you tell me where I could have one made like yours for the Becker Companion ?

Thanks

Ronin,

The Vargo/white box is a great little combo. What are you carrying your alcohol in?

I have the good fortune of having a leather crafter near Ottawa that I can drop off my blades to get a good fit to my specs.

Unfortunately, I don't know anyone on BF. Have a search in your vicinity, as I'm sure there's come craftsman that would could lend a hand.

I appreciate the info. Right now I'm carrying my alcohol in some small Nalgene bottles like these:

8.oz ---> http://www.rei.com/product/402054

4.oz ---> http://www.rei.com/product/402055

Although I'm looking for a really well made "flip-top" 4oz - 8oz bottle that will
not leak and that is not affected by denatured alcohol. Also, it must be translucent so that I see how much alcohol remains in the bottle.

Do you know of any bottles that would meet these specs ?

Tony

I picked up a M.U.L.E last summer, I use it when riding my dual sport.....holds less than I thought it would.....but still like it.
