Camera?

For the close-up shot, I agree. But the second shot of the whole knife is focused much better. The color of the second set is much more true to life also, although you wouldn't know that unless you saw the knife in person...

I'm sure different cameras have different settings. For the W/B mine has auto, daylight, cloudy, tungsten, flourescent, flourescent H, flash, and custom.
Auto just means the camera chooses which of the others to use based on the lighting. At least for my camera.

I received my new Canon A700 on Monday. I've glanced through the User's Guide and taken a few photos. So far I have been very pleased. I'll post some photos below so that you can see for yourselves.

Here are some pictures of a knife I recently acquired:

This one was taken with my camera on auto settings and was resized in Photoshop CS2 (no other adjustments).

This next one was taken on auto settings, with a slight tweeking in Photoshop;

This one was taken on the camera's "Fluorescent H" setting;

And here's one that I used Photoshop to adjust the dynamic range a bit;

Here is one zoomed in a bit, but still on the camera's auto settings and just a resize for the web;

Now the same photo tweaked a little bit in Photoshop;

Finally, here's one just for contrast. I took this picture of my 5 year old shortly after getting the camera in the mail. The camera was on auto settings with no flash. The picture has only been resized for the web;

I still have a lot to learn about the camera but so far I'm quite pleased.

Looks good, Chris. What kind of lighting were you using? It looks like the knife is on a concrete slab, so I assume you weren't using a light box. :)
My sample photos also were just resized; nothing else done to them.
BTW, I'm not seeing the picture of your 5-year-old.

Phillip, I was using my homemade light box (Coop's design) with four of the daytime fluorescent bulbs. The concrete is really just a piece of paper that I got in the art store's scrap booking section. They have a great variety of backgrounds.

My light box has been modified slightly since I took this picture (mostly just some brighter bulbs and a mirror inside now).

Dan, thanks for the compliment. Don't let the cuteness fool you though, Julia can be a real monster! :)

Really? That's just paper? Fooled me. :)
I'll post a picture of my lightbox later. Sadly, I built it before finding Coops design. But I think I can fix it.
Cute kid, BTW. :)
