Cameras: Help Me Choose

I didn't read all the responses, but I would go with a Digital SLR such as theNikon D40 with the kit lens or a Canon Digital Rebel. No all-in-one point and shoot can compare to the DSLR's and the price as come to down afforadable levels - sub $400.

Well, thanks for letting us know you didn't read the responses nor the parameters set in the opening post.

In this case (in other words what I was looking for in posting this thread and for my limited purposes), free trumps sub $400.

Free is good. Just trying to help, my brother. I own a camera store and was giving you my honest opinion.

Fair enough. Thank you.

Just as an update...Though the promotion on the Discover card indicated that the cameras take 6 to 10 weeks to receive (with most received in 6 weeks from what I've read online), mine is slated to be received today from amazon.com

This is only a week after I activated the card!

I don't know if this is a total anomaly or not but I'm not complaining.

I'll post again after I've had a little time to settle in with the camera and get to feel my way around its features and controls somewhat.

Camera arrived. Looks like a winner.

Took several quick images on "auto" and with the "macro" function and everything appears to be working properly. Very clear, clean images.

Also, the images downloaded seamlessly from the camera directly to my FotoAlbum software making saving and storing in my (online and laptop) albums a breeze.

Camera works perfectly with my rechargeables and I took the advice to pick up a camera case and larger SD card.

Thanks to all for the great advice.
