My father told me he was sending me out a knife he found in his attic. It arrived today and I was suprised to see that it was a Camillus "Sword Brand" #1014 and marked 'Hand Made'. The handle is definitely not real stag, at least not any horn I have ever seen, and the guard is some type of plastic.

I saw a few comments on here about this knife and I'm curious about the steel. I was able to quickly put an edge back on it, I don't see any rust, it's just dirty, and seemed to survive the hot and humid Florida attic conditions.

Oh, and it came with the original leather sheath, plainly marked 1014 on the back side.

This was the largest pattern in a set of four introduced at the same time.
1011 - Blue Ridge 3" blade
1012 - Great Smoky 4 1/4" blade
1013 - Yellowstone 5" blade
1014 - Grand Canyon 7" blade.
All four had the same blade and handle shape. "Blades of rust resistant steel" is how they describe them. Your knife retailed for $16.50 when introduced.

Thanks for the information regarding the production models of this line. Seems the blade steel held up well under the conditions and took an edge rather easily. I don't really feel like putting it through edge retention excersises to gauge the hardiness of the steel, so I'll just clean it up and add it to my shelf. Perhaps I will give it a test run in the field this weekend.

I see so many fine knives just oiled and put on a shelf by collectors, and it is sad in a way. I mean it is nice to know that excellent examples are being preserved but...A knife is first and foremost a tool, meant to be used. As a collector, I like to acquire MIB knives like everyone else, but quite often, I'll search out and buy a user of the same pattern to try. Let us know how it performs for you. I'd be interested in hearing your impressions of it.
