Camillus, Becker,

Bring back the Magnum Camp and the Machax! Ethan, are you listening? :D

I'm wondering if what we like about these Becker knives is the steel or the design/handling, or both..... How would 1095 stack up against our beloved Becker spec steel?

It's close but, 0170-6C contains some vanadium, copper and silicon which the 1095 does not.

Be careful! I see many posts tossing out steel impurities (I know, intentional ones!) and linking them casually to various macroscopic properties.

It's not that simple. The various impurities interact in non-linear and unexpected ways. And then there's the whole 'interstitial v. substitutional' thing. Not to mention segregation at grain boundaries and grain precipitation.

That's why testing is so important. You can seldom predict a steel's characteristics so easily. Sometimes, in spite of careful quality control, even 'old school' steels from major mills shift their properties unexpectedly (and usually unfortunately).

Just be careful out there!

(Says the old solid state physicist)

Guys, could you tell me wad is the original steel that they use for Camillius knives?

0170-6C in the Camillus Beckers.

Who knows what steel was used in the Blackjack Beckers? I asked this question in General a while back and never got a decisive answer.

I think we like the Becker because its a quality knife made in the USA, If you take the USA out of it, it's an ok knife. The Becker will take a beating and still perform. Its reliable, like a best friend. No matter what happens I will use my Brute when I'm out stomping around, it hasn't let me down yet.

Long live the USA Becker.......
